Do we have any club makers here? What are your winter projects?

I'm probably looking at picking up some Wishon 770 CFEs (5-PW) and probably a couple of Wishon PCF wedges. Prolly shafting the 770s with Wishon Series 5 steel and the PCFs with the Wishon High Flight wedge shafts. Also considering Wishon 785HFs in 3 & 4 with GI-335s. I would like to build another driver too, something slightly lower lofted, but I don't know what yet. I'm intrigued by the new Killer Bee offering.

I was really tempted by the GS and GW sales, but I was good this year and ignored them.

My winter project last year was to build a club rack for the garage to store/organize my clubs better, but I never got around to it.  That's what I really should be doing this winter.

But what I'll probably end up doing is tinkering with my irons, which are probably the weakest part of my game right now.  I'm about to undergo a massive swing change this winter. (I had been experimenting with exclusively using halfswing, deadarm knockdowns for a while, but that experiment is over, and I'm going back to the full swing that I grew up playing)

I bought several identical 7-iron heads a while back when Dynacraft had a $1/head sale, and trimmed a bunch of iron shafts to 7-iron length to compare side by side (Dynamic Gold R, DGSL, Tx-90R, Tx-90S, FST ProWhite, FST pro silver, FST satin silver, Apollo hump, Rifle 5.0, Nippon NS950).

I had settled on the FST Pro Silvers back then, but that was with my weird half-swing maneuver, so now I'm going to repeat the process with my more conventional full swing this winter (it's wet and cold, but I can play year-round here).

anyone here willing to do some shaft pulls/trims-installs (with new grips)  if i send them the materials and a few  'aske' cds

I spent most of yesterday afternoon listening to online song samples trying to find a good cd for the season.

Unfortunately, I can't do any graphite pulls/grip installs at the moment.  We just moved into a new house and I haven't put a vise in the garage yet.  So the only thing I'm doing these days is pulling and epoxying steel shafts.  I tried pulling a graphite shaft without using the extractor and completely screwed up the shaft. >:( [sm_disgust]

I'm interested in your test. I currently play the Merc Stepless Savage in my Ravens and have just hoed a set of 560MC's. I was leaning toward the ProWhites because a I hit the ball high and want a lower trajectory, but I'm open to other shafts. (but I like the stepless variety so much...)

I moved to a new house recently and can't find the notes from my iron shaft testing. 

I had all these plans to rank each shaft for feel, distance, and dispersion, but when it came down to side-by-side testing at the range, I felt there was too much inconsistency in my swing, the different range balls, and the wind to come to any concrete conclusions and come up with hard data.

So, instead, what I did was lay out each club in a row and grab two at a time from the group and hit just those two for a while.  Then when I had a definite preference between those two I would put them back in the row but with the preferred club always on one side. I repeated this several times throughout the row until all my favorites emerged to one side.  Essentially I did a bubble sort on the different shafts.

I can't remember the entire list, but the two that came in tied for first were the TX-90R and the FST Pro Silver.  And just behind them was the Dynamic Gold R.

The one revelation that I had while doing this was that if I was testing a club that I wasn't hitting that well, I realized that I would start doubting my swing and I would start making subtle compensations in my swing in an attempt to make that particular shaft work.  Toward the end of my testing I realized I was doing this, and when I felt this happening, I would go and grab one of my favorite shafts and swing naturally just to get the feel that my natural swing could indeed produce a good shot without any tinkering.

Unfortunately, that testing was while I was going through a period of trying out a swing experiment with a Natural Golf type short backswing, no wristcock, type of swing.  It was very accurate, but not very far.  I would deloft the clubface a lot, but the speed was fairly low on my swing speed radar. 

I've recently gone back to my original swing because I reached my goal of a new Personal Best (84) with that experimental swing a couple of weeks ago.   It is much more conventional, with a big wristhinge, full backswing and much higher mph.  Unfortunately the FST Pro Silvers which were great for my funky natural golf swing now cause my shots to balloon big time, so I need to go through this shaft experiment all over again with my new swing and see what emerges as the favorite this time.

I'm werkin' on something I started last winter where I bought 6 or 7 983k's of various lofts.

I've had one head relieved of it's hosel via a ultra high pressure waterjet cutter.  By cutting the hosel off low, I minimize the ultimate BBGM and reduce the headweight somewhat to accomodate those silly Club Connex.  I could easily get some Nak heads to do the same thing but call it stubborness in wanting to leave Nak in the past.

So I'll have a head or two in every loft from 8.5 to 11.5 and a bunch of test shafts ready to rock. 

This Spring I hope to have a covered hitting area with a 10' cage in my yard.  Don't know why really...seems like something to do. LOL

Putting new shafts in my irons, building a hybrid and building two wedges.  If I'm lucky (and fast), they'll be done by the first of the year.

Sometimes there's alittle too much Iron Maiden for my liking but then Maiden is still better than the mallcore crap that's around these days.
