Title: This idea has come from the devil and not from God
Post by: Uisce Beatha on March 21, 2007, 06:19:04 PM
Anyone following the story in English Football League re: no draws?  Looney toons indeed.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=415885&root=england&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1&cc=5901

Any dissenting opinions?

The devil hates draws.

I'm not sure which I dislike more, Draws or ending the game in a penalty shoot out.

I've always been of the mind "if it ain't broke don't try to fix it".  Depends I guess on who thinks it's broke.

Reminds me of the NHL.

Now: 2 points for a win either in regulation, overtime or the shootout. 1 point for a draw after regulation no matter what happens in the overtime or shootout.

Back in the day (my youth): 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 points for a loss, no overtime.

They added OT in 1983-84 but the problem in the beginning was you "lost" your point if you were beat thus teams weren't as aggressive in the OT. So they tweaked the rules in 1999-2000 which meant teams tied after regulation were assured a single point. They added shootouts in 2005-06

I guess I'm O.K. with the loser in OT keeping the point but here's what I don't like: shootouts. IMO, simply the lamest way to determine a winner. If it's tied after the OT, so be it. I've never understood why shootouts need to exist. It's not hockey.

You can imagine what I think of using shootouts to determine the World Cup winner.  [sm_devil]

I liken shootouts to a golf tournament being tied after 4 rounds and then heading over to the practice green and have a best of 5 from 20 feet putting contest.

One more thing.

If shootouts are so great, why hasn't the NHL implemented them in the playoffs? Nothing better than overtime hockey in the playoffs.

And for football/soccer.......going to penalty kicks is ridiculous.

My $0.02.

I don't like penalties in the finals either but I'm can't for the life of me figure out something better.  I do think the golden goal should have been kept though.  Does that much more to avoid having to go to penalties.

$.02  i love shootouts

they're shiiiiite for really proving a game winner (aka best team that day might lose) but they're 100% edge of your seat as a spectator.

Draws are great.  I love the 3-0-1 point distribution.  It's perfect for league and group play.  Nothing like earning a point away at Old Trafford (no matter who you are).   [sm_devil]

Obviously they don't work in knockout competitions and there has to be something to end the game.  But these guys are talking about not having draws in league play.  I think they're nuts.  Thank God they're not considering it for the Premiership.

No draws.....foolishness with a capital DUMB ASS. Golden goal should have been kept.

Golden goal should have been kept.
Agreed. But what do you do when they go 20, 30, 40 minutes or more and no one scores in extra time? Soccer (sorry, football) is tough enough running around for the regulation 90 minutes.

It would never happen, but how about 2v2 in the penalty box only, ball gets started from the baseline of the 18. Each team gets an offensive opportunity. This would require the coaches to create offensive and defensive match ups. Run it with the logic of penalties. You have to run through all your players on the field first.

At some point you still have to have penalties.  After two extra time period seems about right.  I agree that more than that and you'd be killing off players.

I think Steggie and I are on the same page.  The golden goal rule at least avoided penalties due to both teams scoring the same, non-zero number of goals in extra time.  Anything to get avoid having a match decided with penalties.
