A buddy of mine from Baltimore called me on Monday to tell me he had tickets to Wednesday's practice round and the par-3 tournament; he asked whether I could take the day off if he caught a flight down.

Uhhhhhh, yeaaahhh, I'll pick you up when you get in.

It was amazing.  A couple of quick notes, in no particular order:

1) We don't see a lot of the front 9 on TV.  It is pretty wide open.  That said, there is a lot of altitude change.  The television just does not capture how much altitude change there is throughout the course.  I was very tired at the end of the day from walking the course - though 6-1/2 hours of sleep the previous two nights did not help. 

2) The television does not come close to capturing just how green and lush the course is.  Absolutely immaculate.  The fairways are as short as some of the greens I play.  Yes, we have heard about the rough this week.  Yes, you can see the definitive transition between the fairway and rough.  The fairway rough is barely rough.

3) The back 9, especially Amen Corner, is a religious experience. 

4) The risk/reward on shots - even on the par-3 tournament, players are always looking to avoid the big score.  On every hole, there is a potentially big score looming.  Walking the course and seeing how the holes are played, it helped me to understand why the course plays tough, especially with the wind.

5) The par-3 tourney was a blast.  No set times for players, they simply come out as threesomes throughout the afternoon.  David Toms had an ace on the hole we camped out at - too bad I missed it (coming back through the treeline from getting some water, only to hear the crowd erupt).   

--It was fun seeing all the players with their kids on the par-3 - most walked the course with their parent.

If you get the chance to go, do it.  I'll be putting in for the lottery every year now.
