Title: What's Your Favorite Soup?
Post by: dystopia on March 06, 2007, 12:57:07 PM
I meant to create this thread a long time ago back when Torpedo was complaining about the soup that E-A-G-L-E! made, but I completely forgot.  Well, here it is, anyway...

2. New England Clam Chowder
3. French Onion
4. Matzo ball soup

(I only intended to have a top 3, but couldn't stop.  I guess I really like soups.  :P)

Least favorite soups:
1. Manhattan Clam Chowder
2. Split Pea Soup
3. Borscht

1. Chili

[threadjack]

Do you eat your chili straight or over macaroni/spaghetti/other?  I grew up eating chili as is, but I was at a Superbowl party in January where they served chili over macaroni (host is from Wisconsin).  It was good. Also, I once went to a chili-centric restaurant in Maryland that served their chili over spaghetti, and it was great!

There's a little hole-in-the-wall place here called The Soup Kitchen that makes a tomato soup that would change your mind.

The secret to tomato soup is big chunks of real tomato, basil and roasted garlic, none of that ketchup tasting watered down tomato sauce crap that gets passed off as soup by Campbell's. [sm_disgust]

Chili is NOT 'soup'. And Aske, having lived in Texas at one point, should know better.  [sm_devil] ;)

Minestrone is soup, chili is 'chili'. And adding beans to chili is a capitol offense.

But back to the topic....

my favorites:
Tomato
French Onion
anything I get from this Pho place down the street

Ooh! I forgot about Pho. Good stuff! (Though I can generally live without tendon or tripe in mine.)

Heh, the latter sounds similar what I usually get - except I don't eat Campbell's.  I'll have to try out that 'secret'.  Thanks. :)

I usually use a can of campbell's, a good canned tomato, some basil, and some cream  cheese when I make tomato soup.  But if I am in a hurry, Campbell's and some crackers work just fine. >:(

1- Homemade post-Thanksgiving turkey soup
2- Pozole
3- Wonton noodle soup
3(2)- Tom Kha Gai (along with most Thai soups)

I also like corn chowder, minestrone, and ramen (with real broth, not powdered), but I would have to be in the right mood.  I'd have the other four any time.

What are your favorite and least favorite soups?

Here are my favorites:
1. Lobster Bisque

The best lobster bisque that I've ever had was at a little French-Swiss restaurant called Chef Paul's on Piedmont in Oakland. The bisque was unbelievably rich, and each bowl came with a claw or portion of the tail. It was served with popovers, which were awesome in their own right. Unfortunately, Chef Paul retired and moved back to Switzerland a few years ago, so his restaurant is now closed. :sad3:

Any soup that's hot and homemade.

I once made a pot of chicken/noodle/vegetable out of mostly leftovers that was incredible.  Do you think I've ever been able to duplicate it? :'(

Aske-try corn chips (Fritos) instead of crackers on your chili.

The best recipes - if not recorded right away - are almost certainly never duplicable.  The best you can do then is come close. :(

If you ever get in the Crockett area, try Nantucket's @ the base of the Carquinez bridge...best cioppino and bisque I've had in the Bay Area.

I like vegetables veloutee but it's so hard to find it anywhere that it's not totally upscale. I might have to find a recipe for myself now.

Generally, though I like the taste of most soups, I don't find them filling unless I eat at least half a loaf of bread with them..

3) Hopper's (local brew pub) Beef & Barley

[tj]Hopper's used to have one of the better vegetarian burgers around (I know, I know, but sometimes this lib likes a veggie burger with his soy latte and tofu). Apparently the good citizens of Midvale aren't light enough in the loafers to enjoy a good black bean burger, as it was removed from their menu some time ago. Their pale ale (forget what they call it) is quite good too. Not Squatters good, but perhaps plaque good.[/tj]

Madame X Nitro Stout - Best microbrew Irish dry stout I've ever had.  Nitrogen served and the whole business.   [sm_drink]

Pale Ale is also very, very good.  I'd put it above Squatters.

I love Hoppers.  I'll travel from Layton to Midvale just to have wings and beers.
