The video is crazy.

Evidently. state of the art means:

'Partially enclose the high speed turns with a series of solid metal *goshdarn* poles.'

Link here. Poor quality.

That's like a Faces of Death video!

Quote
Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Centre.

Uh. Slight design flaw there?

Bet you a dollar we get some pretty good 'Blame The Victim' BS courtesy of the IOC before the weekend is out...

He shouldn't have worn such a bouncy suit that caused him to bounce off the wall and into the pole?

Something like that.

Should also be a WHOLE bunch of 'Embodies The Olympic Spirit' douchebagginess going around tonight.

The International Luge Federation and Vancouver Olympic officials said their investigation showed that the crash was the result of human error and that "there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track."

His error was crashing into the exposed pole going backwards at 90 MPH.

I do like how it's 'Human Error, but we're going to raise the wall anyway. You know, just in case'

They should have known something was not normal when the speed is 10+ faster than any other track. Secondly, they said just now "for safety issues the guys start where the ladies start was and the ladies will start further down. In addition they added the wall at turn 16 and shaved some of the ice on some of the curves for the safety of the athletes."

Yet they claim the fact that he crashed was b/c he couldn't control when he came around the curve. Just terrible that they blame him. And like some teams had complained about that they didn't have a track like that to practice on.

I've read that the competitors have been pointing out potential safety problems for a couple of years.

That said, I also gather that lugers actually leaving the course is pretty rare.

At least they're addressing it.

I am glad they are finally addressing it, but it should not have taken an accident of this magnitude to make a change.
