Oh boy - Casablanca and Caddyshack are both HD-DVD only, no Blew-Ray.

Seems my mind was just made up for me  [sm_devil]

Soon... very soon.

comeon, buy $300 worth of movies, saving $100-$150 to in store.  use those savings to buy the hd-dvd player.

then you have no reason not to get the TV  ;)

Out of curiosity, what happens when one plays an HD-DVD disc in a standard DVD player?  I'm looking at getting the Planet Earth set, which comes in BluRay and HD-DVD.

nothing.
it doesnt work.  hdvds and blowrays are 'etched' with higher data density not readable by redlaser dvds... they use blue/violet lasers at a tighter wavelength.

conversely, standard dvds will play in either (backwards compatible to longer wavelength).

hd-dvds are sometimes sold for $4 more than normal as a combo disc (1 side hd-dvd, the other normal dvd) so that you can play them in old dvd players (in car, 2nd room, on plane portable, etc) as you have probably not yet acquired 3-4 hd media players .  blowray can not offer any such combo.    in time, hd-dvd/dvd combo will probably emerge as the only (hd-dvd) format offering for day/date releases on new titles to help edge the 'war' towards hd-dvd... maybe around xmas time. they'll probably be $2-$3 more than current dvd offerings (speculation)

So it just plays a continuous loop of the "you got owned" chant?

good start. let me know how good the transfer is on Caddyshack (use Troy DC, Training Day, or 300 as your visual reference)
