Title: OK, I've had it!
Post by: Aske on March 15, 2008, 01:15:00 PM
with sportscasters trying to fill dead air with ridiculous crap.

{Miller on O'Hair, Watney} "they hit it long and straight with driver."

so seriously, is there ANY seriously competitive pro out there that  this doesn't *really* apply to (ok, fred funk hits it short and straight, a couple of players here and there relyon /play to  serious draws/fades but comeon)

I have a pet peeve that very often has something to do with Tiger (or insert popular name).

A number of players are tied at -6.  Of those Sean O'Hair was first out and, in theory always and in practice today, had to accomplish more than any other players to get there.  He should be first on the scoreboard.  The PGA Tour site has it right.  How hard is for TV to do so?

Agenda is not the right word but they'll butcher the official standings, squash the font and run off the top and bottom of the screen in order to get a big name player on the first page.  If he's on the first page already they'll push him as high as they can on the list.

agenda is definitely the right word for it.  "make sure viewers 1st and foremost see WOODS as viable and should watch more today/tomorrow"

As I'm guessing you know, players are ordered first by score and second by when they posted their scores in the event of ties.  Effort or degree of comeback has nothing to do with it.

And yeah, it annoys me too.  But I can understand how commercial television is going to "cheat" the leaderboard to get name recognition to work for them.

Yes, I understand how and why it works but I also believe the first in, first up thing is somewhat predicated on the fact that the player potentially came from further back and are in a way more deserving than later players who tie them.  Essentially, if I shoot -6 on Saturday and you shoot -4 and we end up tied then I did better and deserve to go out later on Sunday.

I also understand why they do it but it's extremely lame.  It's also a sad commentary that the attention span, or even the intelligence, of the viewers is so limited they can't figure out that -6 on the first page is the same score as -6 on the second.
