I heard on NPR pieces of an old Fresh Air program last night, where the discussion was about Steve Carell's stint on the Daily Show.  He said the origin of these interview gigs, which he found unsettling, was to find the truly insane and mock them.  But they had moved away from that.

It seems to have fallen right back into their laps.  For as long as Gidget stands on the pedestal, Wasilla will write itself.
