[Politics/Religion] dibs on the 'Chance the Gardener' analogy
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:44:40 AM »

I'm busy for a while and won't get to this soon, but with Joe the Plumber now getting called in from Gaza to the Capitol building to consult with the Repulithongs over economic policy, I wanted to get intertubule status as having first made the connection between our man Joe, and the moron gardener played by Petere Sellers in the satirical classic, Being There.

For the meantime, please let, "Oh! Good God!" suffice as my general attitude regarding said development.

Joe the Plumber has been summoned to Washington, away from his vitally important media job of reporting how the mainstream media coverage of the Gaza crisis is sorely lacking.

The republicans have invited him back to DC because they desperately need his advice on how to deal with the whole stimulus package vote thing.  Should they vote for it, performing the equivalent of buttsecks rape of their hardcore base, or should they vote against it, performing the equivalent of buttsecks rape of the entire country?  Really tough call.  Which is why Joe the Plumber is seen as absolutely indispensable. They hope his utterances will provide a solution for what conflicts them.

Chance the Gardner was a character played by Peter Sellers, in the movie Being There

Basically, Chance was a caretaker for some rich guy but also a complete and total moron, just like Joe the Plumber.  Except not as mean and scary looking as Joe.  Chance learned everything he knows from watching TV.  Probably just like Joe the Plumber, except Joe the Plumber only watches Fox News when not watching all his pröñ channels.

Anyway......

Events occur in Chances life, I can't remember exactly, such that he is mistaken for someone far more important than he really is.  He eventually finds himself in the halls of power, becoming a muse for all the leaders, including the President, where his brief little snippets about gardening and whatnot are misinterpreted as deep metaphors for how to deal with the various crisis of government at the time.

My thesis is that Joe the Plumber is, without even a modicum of self-awareness, life imitating a fairly nice piece of 30+ year old art.

Anyway, I call dibs on this concept.

With all due respect to my esteemed colleague Sir Rich...errrr Blader, I feel that Chance the Gardener is off target.

Chance was an innocent on to whom others projected their own desires and experiences. In doing so, they often transcended their own self imposed limitations.

JTP is no such character. I think he's much more like Walter Sobchak, physically and otherwise.
