If these stores carry more than just Microsoft's consumer products like Xbox, Zune, and miscellaneous computer accessories, they can do well. Their software product catalog has grown so huge with different flavors of every software title, each having its own set of features and licensing requirements, I'm sure it gets a little confusing for most people. By having knowledgeable sales staff in the stores, they could really cater to small to medium-sized businesses that don't have their own corporate IT guys.

It wouldn't hurt to have their own Geek Squad-type guys in the store too to fix all those computers infected with viruses due to IE security holes.  Wink

Definite strong ick factor.

Sounds to me like these microsoft outlets will be akin to those seedy pröñ/**** shops:  places you can't really avoid going into from time to time, but you'd work hard not to be seen doing so.
