None of those capacities had much, if anything, to do with actually designing or manufacturing vehicles. He's a money guy, and proudly announced when he took the helm that 'Manfacturing automobiles would no longer be GM's core business'.

So, GM went into the consumer credit and home mortgage industries to an extent that no other manufacturer had ever considered.

It's not a surprise. Automobiles are no longer products that manufacturers can make a profit selling. They're just delivery devices for gasoline.
