Golfhos - what say you question
« on: June 26, 2009, 07:45:56 AM »

Watching some of the MJ news last night Susan exclaimed, "I am pretty sure there is no one, upon dying, that I would travel to stand outside the hospital or with the crowd at XYZ impromptu memorial site."

You guys?

The only thing that comes remotely close for me (and Susan as I reminded her). We happened to be in LA on a vacation six months after OJ's white Bronco chase. Long story short I have a picture of myself standing in front of the gate on the driveway at his home.  Devil

I could see such a crowd forming if Ted Danson were in the hospital.  But only in LA

Impromptu? Dunno. Went to a vigil for Dale Earnhardt Sr.

I made the pilgrimage to Graceland 20 years ago, driving back from AL to MN.  I think beer played a part in the decision to stop by Tupelo, MS, along the way.

I find it a little sad that some of us don't seem to have 'Hero's' any more, or at least won't admit it to ourselves.

I was deeply, deeply affected by the taking of my hero, even  in my middle 30's. The gathering of the affected that I attended was a terrific experience.

Even more intense was attending the Sonoma race in June and standing in absolute silence on the third lap with 150,000 others.

There was only the roar of the engines to help us through our shared grief.

It wasn't enough, but it was something.

I suppose it's all relative... If you've been fortunate enough to meet your hero, their passing, is often a little more personal.  Often, even though you may not have met them, their personality and what they represent and the fact that "they're not supposed to die": Steve Irwin and Peter Brock are two that come to mind. Here's two blokes; one a wilderness crusader who was your typical larrikin Aussie, the other an Australian Motor Racing Legend who's passing stunned us all.

Would I make a pilgrimage to visit a memorial of a particular individual?? In some cases yes in others no...

I remember Brock's passing as well. He'd pretty much retired, and was taken in what amounted to an exhibition.

It's a dangerous *goshdarn* sport. We've lost 3 drivers and a couple of fans this season already.

 Sad

Don't take this personally, Steve Irwin was a flaming idiot who dared death death to take him at every turn and chose fame over his family. I'm sure his children will take great comfort in how little he cared to watch them grow and become adults.  Devil

Despite how dangerous his antics on camera may have appeared, I doubt that he was ever seriously close to getting killed. His death was a freak occurrence and could have happened to anybody who snorkels near stingrays.

Sure, assuming your definition of 'Snorkel Near' includes 'Handle By The Poisonous Tail'.

I've got to find it. That was a long time ago....well before we had a digital camera.
