Keep hangin' on brother, check in here once in awhile, for me it's been a great source of comedy relief in times of worry.

Job market flat out sucks for those of us in the over qualified (meaning I won't start out at 9.50 an hour)/under educated segment of the work force.

I think the main thing is to stay positive, keep your spirits up, don't let the bastards grind you down and all that bulls*&$. If you have a hard time staying positive on your own, or if you get too depressed go see a doc, seriously, I did, it helps, every little thing helps.

Don't give up, I would hate to see, sometime down the road, that AM or BM is no longer with us. You're a good dude, and I like having good dudes in my galaxy.

I remember you posting about your troubles both here and somewhere else.  Although I went through a rough spot last year, it was nothing compared to what you have been dealing with.

I guess all I can say is, good luck.  I'll be thinking of you.

I did manage to get 3 months worth of work at the end of last year. When it came time for my bene's to kick in I got kicked to the curb and they then tried to get me to work under the table part time, which there is no doubt in my mind they would have later reported my wages and stuck it to me.

I'm on my final unenjoyment extension (I have 18 weeks left) and hoping for the best at this point. I've been applying for janitors jobs, literally, and can't even get an interview most likely due to how much money i made in the past.

In my latest strategy I send out 3 resume's a day everyday to any company that i think i can do something for and that has health benefits. I figure at some point this has to pay off   Smiley

a ? ....

when you are applying for janitor and other stuff you are too highly paid for from the past,  are you listing prior employment and salary?
I have heard of some people in this climate doing better by not listing prior employment at all.

Re: the janitor jobs
I doubt it really has to do with your past salary per se, unless you stated that as your salary requirement. It most likely has to do with the fact that you're over-qualified for the position. If you currently don't have high salary demands, it may seem silly that your skill level could be a detriment to your getting a job, but that is exactly the case. Given this "buyer's market" why would they risk hiring somebody who would bail on the position for a better one the instant the job market improves when there is a glut of upperwardly-immobile candidates out there with no skills to become anything other than a janitor?

If you really want those janitor position consider de-emphasizing or outright omitting anything on your resume that makes you seem qualified for anything other than janitorial services. If you have anything beyond a high school education, leave it out. Don't mention anything about training or computer skills. Since you sort of have to list past companies that you worked for, just mention the menial tasks that you had to do. You might want to throw in some bad spelling and poor grammar while you're at it.

Iz got sum skillz!

That is exactly my problem. They figure I will bolt as soon as a better job comes along which is exactly the case. The "custodian" jobs I applied for were at two local colleges, the one paid enough that I would have possibly considered staying there. Mainly at this point it is all about trying to get some health benefits for my family before catastrophe REALLY strikes.
The fact of the matter is i get $375 a week for the next 18 weeks so i am looking for at least that and the possibility of some benefits in the near future. As i get closer to running out of unemployment obviously the target will get adjusted to anything to bring money in.

I removed any wage demands or history a while back when things started to get really ugly looking. The main stumbling block is the glut of potential candidates for any job. To get a job in this town right now you almost have to know someone to get your foot in the door.

Remember what Dallas looked like during the housing glut during the 80's where you looked down a street and every house was vacant and for sale? That is the current state of all our industrial complexes in metro Detroit.

It's gotten to the point where we drive through industrial parks and first look to see who is still in business, and then write them down so i can send a resume and start watching their websites for any potential postings.
