Paddy Power, renowned for settling its bets early, paid off anyone who bet on Woods to win the PGA Championship title on Friday, when he led by four shots through 36 holes.

wtf?  They pay off on Friday.  Shocked

You gots to understand Ireland.  Give the punters their winnings and they'll "re-invest" at 70% leaving a bit in their pocket for a few jars.  Do it on a Friday and you're at 85% as everyone is already half lit.  Might have backfired this time but there's a reason there's a Paddy Power on damn near every corner in the country.  The place is gambling mad - most of it on the ponies.

Yeah they love their ponies, but they don't pay out on the horse that's in the lead when they round the clubhouse turn. Grin

Good point.  And they'll probably end up with 5x the bettors going forward because of this publicity.

[Derail]

punters

I see/hear this word used alot, and I'm a little unclear as to it's meaning, or more specifically it's positive/negative connotations.

Depends on context, one supposes?

From Wiki:The word punter may refer to:
A British, Australian and Hiberno (Irish) English colloquial term for a paying guest or customer, especially
 a patron of a brothel
a gambler, particularly an amateur betting on horse racing or a player in the game of Baccarat

Interesting, but Wiki can't contain the actual usage, which is why I asked Uisce, more or less. I hear the screaming TV chef guy use it on the BBC version of Kitchen Nightmares, and I could never figure out if he was insulting the clientele or not.
