steelers needs for next season
« on: December 31, 2006, 02:56:04 PM »

#1
field turf- there is NO REMAINING DOUBT  this team is a finesse/speed team now
november/december in heinz field should not eliminate the advantages parker / holmes  offer

#2
head coach- either promote grimm/whisenhunt   or buy jeff fischer
possibly off coordinator - if promoting whisenhunt or he leaves for somewhere else

#3
cornerback- they need a speed corner.  mcfadden is great against tall receivers.  taylor is a great physical corner against strong receivers.  neither is great against speed receivers.   de*feces* toastsend needs to retire.  he couldn't cover  roadkill.   carter has shown good growth this year playing the nickleback and is also potentially good out of the slot on blitzes.   this is  without doubt the WEAKEST part of  this team  .  i don't think colclough has shown enough progression in this area.

*edit note- I'm moving this up to #3.
- IIRC next season their non-division games are the AFC EAST and the NFC WEST
very pass happy divisions.

#4
offensive lineman(men?)- despite playing ok today, the line was mediocre most of the year and in particular got blown up on almost every play against baltimore.  in particular,  simmons is pathetic more often than not, as is smith    hartings/ faneca  are good, and starks shows promise more often than not.  the samoan guy that stepped in a few games for simmons played good that game,  and es**** must be viewed as a let down at this point.   they will lose 2 games to baltimore next year if they don't fix this position.

#5
runningback- resign davenport at all costs.  he is great as the 1-2 punch they need, and has been very good on kickoff returns.

#6
punt returner- a gamebreaker here is needed.  holmes struggled with this at first (fumbles) and now that he holds on to it, he runs it back too cautiously.  not to mention, we don't need him getting hurt returning punts.  he will be the #2 receiver next year.   if they don't address this position, they should automatically fair catch EVERY SINGLE punt next year.

#7
defensive lineman/ rushing linebacker-  I don't know if it's personnel, schemes, or what,  but the steelers pass rush seldom got to the QB this year.  many times, as bad as the corners played this year, they were covering man on man for 5-10 seconds  because the blitz was sent and never pressured the opposing QB.

#8
safety- clark must be considered a bust.  he doesnt cover well, and he's too small to play the run in the afc north.  smith played well in the second half, but is still only mediocre at best.  definitely an improvement in coverage over clark.  if polamalu comes back to full strength,  this position is ok, but not great.

Was the problem Superbowl hangover?

i dont know.   they certainly lacked fire at times (as did he)

they also lost at least 3 games strictly due to idiotic coaching decisions (choice of punt returners, sticking to play veterans who are obviously too old/slow  gettin repeatedly beat... etc)

they lost 3-4 games they had 10 point leads in
 Disgusted

Cowher is expected to announce his future plans within a few days of the season-ending game Dec. 31 at Cincinnati, one that is without playoff implications for the no-longer-defending Super Bowl champion Steelers (7-8).

"That's for next week," Cowher said when asked if he would return next season. "We'll talk about that next week. It won't go long. I'm not sure what the time frame is. But I think the most important thing is to be focused on this game."

That he appears ready to announce his decision quickly could be a sign the Steelers might soon be looking for a new coach for only the second time since 1969. Chuck Noll (1969-91) and Cowher (1992-present) have been their only coaches since then.

If Cowher decides to retire -- if only briefly -- and not finish out a contract that expires after the 2007 season, the Steelers want to begin searching for a new coach as soon as possible since three or four other NFL teams also could be in the market for a coach....

Cowher's wife and youngest daughter moved to the family's new home in Raleigh, N.C., earlier this year, and Cowher made several trips there during the season. Being an absentee father no doubt doesn't appeal to Cowher, but an NFL coach's job has become all encompassing with offseason workouts, minicamps, coaching sessions and the draft.

There was, but it has been filled.  I just don't think he was there all season for the Steelers.  Going to be interesting to see what decision is made.
