Is it me or are the both of you arguing the same point from different angles?

More like from different points of view. Phil has been a vocal critic of the new rule since it was first announced. Him being the king of bomb and gouge and all. He first had some Callaway wedges custom made which were judged non conforming. It was then that he decided to take the route he has.

So what you have is 138 guys playing within the rules as they stand today and 6 guys that have chosen to do an end run on the rules as they are currently written. Apparently it is no longer a gentleman's game.  Wink

Where we disagree is whether or not they are playing within the rules. Even Phil says the clubs are not legal.

Quote
"I've sent in grooves that are legal but have not been approved for play," he said. "And I feel like the Eye-2 grooves are not legal, or don't conform, but they are approved for play. And after talking about it to the tour and the USGA, the only thing that matters is, 'Are they approved for play?'

LMAO! This further proves that the PGA TOUR is a bunch of pussies that hide behind the USGA. All they had to do is implement their own conditions of play rules on top of what the USGA RoG allow for. They have could set their own more stringent rules for groove shapes so that the USGA wouldn't have been compelled to impose the stupid rule on the rest of us, and they could still do it now vis-a-vis grandfathered equipment to eliminate any controversy now. On top of that could have set their own more stringent COR limits for drivers so these guys didn't turn the game into the joke that it is of bomb and gouge.

No they can't and that is the real can of worms. They also settled with Ping about 5 years after the USGA did.

[more rant]
The USGA needs to get out of the business of equipment rules PERIOD! Their equipment rules are *goshdarn* arbitrary, and they change them on a whim whenever the *fudge* they feel like it. Set the basic guidelines for "what is a club" in the RoG, and then STFU! Their goddamn Appendix II for equipment isn't even technically part of the RoG. They added that *feces* after the fact for the sole purpose of being able to change the rules on a whim without making the RoG proper look like a *goshdarn* joke having to be changed every year. Just let the various tours set their own *goshdarn* equipment rules that change over time to maintain equitable play within their own little rice bowls. And another thing, these tours also need to learn the rules themselves. I can't stand watching these *fudge*ers pick their asses while they wait for a USGA official to come over to make a ruling.

From my end:

The disagreement appears to be over the use of the word 'Cheat'.

One of us knows the definition, one does not.

The clubs in question do not meet current USGA specifications for groove shape and volume. However, they are allowed for use under the rules.

There is no 'Cheat' involved.

At this point, you might be right, but only because they've bolloxed it up so badly. The real deal is they should have stuck by their guns in 1987, but old man Solheim skeered 'em into backing off.

http://www.nytimes.com/19...lawsuit.html?pagewanted=1

Nowadays,  the equipment manufacturers are running the goddamn show anyway. The USGA should have stepped in on balloon-on-a-string driver heads by asking WOOD manufacturers what the largest head they could make was, adding 20 pct and saying that's IT, and by the way it has to look like a *goshdarn* golf club, not a toaster.

Same thing with the truly most disturbing trend in gold clubs: MOI putters.

I mean, really? REALLY?

For me, I intend to use my TM 320i irons on Rifles until I'm well into my early 60's, and if some whippersnapper suggests that I am 'Cheating, I think I shall reach into my bag and hand him a picture of Greg Oden and tell him to stick THAT in his *goshdarn* mouth...

I never said Phil or anyone else was "cheating". I said they chose to do a legal end run around the current rules. Is it cheating? No. Is it the right thing to do? I don't think so, and apparently neither does the 95% that choose to play within the current rules.

One more time: 100 pct are playing within the rules, at least as far as equipment goes.

I think the 95% is about to get a serious lesson in the use of the word 'Cheat' in the meeting on Monday.

As in: The next one of you that uses the word 'Cheat' in relation to this situation is going to get fined and suspended.

Say it a 1,000 more times if you like it is simply not true. Finding a way to skirt the rules and playing within the rules are not the same thing.

So we agree that there is no 'Cheating' going on here?

Good enough.

You appear to be trying to have it both ways:

'Phil is not cheating, but he is breaking the rules'.

Bull*feces*. He's not breaking any rule. He is complying with the PGA Tour rules to the letter, and any player who continues to complain about it or (worse) accuses him of 'cheating' is way, way out of line.

Let's see if we can agree on this:

It's a pretty stupid rule if it has an exception this large in it.
