So we're going to take the ONE thing in Big Time College Athletics that actually works wonderfully (all apologies to the College World Series) and change it because why, exactly, are we doing this?

It's part of this post Boomer mentality that all the young children that participate in sports are to be considered winners.

We don't like having our children face the possibility of losing at a sport.  All the teams get first place trophies because everyone that plays is a winner!

You can imagine how damaging it is to those poor young men to not get invited to the tournament.

LOL  Oddly enough that's the exact conspiracy I go to on all televised sports.

I say the NBA and MLB are teh worst.

Kinda like I argued at teh other joint about re-doing NFL overtime.  I can't believe they don't play a whole 15 minute O.T. quarter and take more of Budweiser's money.

Well, you've got the PGA and NASCAR instituting completely artificial "Playoffs" to drive late season ratings, and then everybody else fighting it out for a distant 3rd.

OTOH, those meet your other criteria as well:

'Well, it's just NO FAIR that the nonentity in 10th place has no shot to win the championship as the season winds down!'
