 Sad Angry Angry

I really hope Stewart/Colbert go on and on about this .   The public is misinformed (no duh), but even far more so than on average issues.

I'd actually say if we don't have some sort of codified NetWork Neutrality in place by 2012 I will view the Obama administration as a failure, no matter what.  The infrastructure IS THE PUBLIC's.

I don't know that as a fact. I know it as a fact on the highway system and most of the power grid, but I believe alot of the fiber optic cable was laid privately.

via technology developed and given to them by the military, by a variety of subsidies, easements, and taxbreaks/right to monopolies, etc.

i'll put it this way-- ignore whether the infrastructure is the public's or not.

would you like your phone company to block calls from customers on another provider's network unless you (or they) paid for a higher tier price plan?   of course not.  there are laws in place to prevent this abuse for a reason.

Well, you can't. This isn't like public radio airwaves and the Free Market wharrgarble surrounding that. This is about private businesses ability to control the content on networks that they built.

Cell phone companies charge extra for out of network calls ALL THE TIME.

I keep trying to come down on the 'Right Side' of this issue, and I just can't. If I own a building, I have control over what comes into and goes out of it

Again, they didn't come close to 50%, let alone 100% financing that cable or tech themselves.  I don't know the exact #, but  I would like to see it.

someone on fark put it better than I could, imagine the analogy is a public electric utility.  subisidized, but owning part of the infrastructure.
should they charge you more to use your vacuum if it's a dyson but their "approved" partner is a hoover?

A Dyson uses more electricity than a Hoover, so it's cost is different to the consumer. It also profits the utility more.

Believe it or not, this is one where the marketplace will be the ultimate arbiter.

If Comcast is being stupid about access, and Qwest isn't, more people will use Qwest.

ok, I was implying they use the same amount of electricity....

anyways, a lot of people can't choose (other than not to have internet at all), that's the problem.

Look at it this way:

How many monopolies on broadband are there? I'm guessing very, very few. 90 pct of the country probably has access to multiple sources. The remaining 10 pct are going to have to stick with talk radio and network news.

Think of the lulz!

Maybe I'm just unluck to have lived/live where I do.  I live in "the 2nd best small city" in the country, right next to a huge metro area and it's just now starting to get a 2nd broadband provider in select areas-- and they're doing it by renting the cable of the 1st.....  Most of Pittsburgh still only has one broadband source.    According to my 'rents (not that they really know much), their city only has one.

 Don't Know
