no real sympathy-- as terrible as it was --- because it was bound to happen again... especially with last years changes to the catch rules

league never fixed the possession rule officially following this
http://sports.espn.go.com...s05/news/story?id=2294309

which happened on a far bigger stage and was even more absurd

Just saw the replay on SNF, and it sort of makes sense: Since the receiver isn't down by contact and doesn't maintain possession, it wouldn't be a completion in the field of play.

Still seems like a stupid rule.

Just from the quick 3 times replay I saw;  I'm calling  BS

Dude caught the ball. Wasn't "in the field of play"  He was across that imaginary line of the endzone.  IMO  That's a catch and a touchdown.

What's really worthless and laughable is Costas related the ruling to the Dustin Johnson ruling from the PGA.

LOL

"imaginary line" only matters when you already* have possession.  rules of possession for catch when going to ground were changed last season...

That doesn't make any sense with respect to "breaking the plane"  If that still exists.

Right now I don't have a dog in the fight so I don't really give a *feces*.  But (without the research you guys have done)  seems like bull*feces* to me.

when you break the plane, you ALREADY have possession, you're running it in because you've been handed it, or caught it already.

the rules were changed last season that to make a catch, you had to control it THROUGH falling to the ground (assuming the act of the catch makes you go down)- - that defines possession in and of itself.  as in if the ball touches the ground while you're going down OR* in the motion of getting up from going down, it's incomplete.    even if its in the endzone.

Yup. 'Breaking the plane only exists if you have possession when you break it. It would either be an incomplete pass or a fumble in the field of play .

So (Is it the ruling that I haven't read)   You are conceding this is an incompletion?

It is. The rule is being correctly applied, but the rule sucks.
