I tried to coach my kids to do what Jeter did.  Sort of.  I mean, I would tell them time and again that if they ever get hit by a pitch to just drop the bat and run to first and don't wait for the ump to give permission.

Every season, there a handful of kids who get grazed but the ump didn't call it.  The kids stand there and sort of beg with their eyes and then invariably strike out because they are just so flummoxed by the injustice of it all, and come back in tears crying about the lousy ump.  I'm like, "WTF didn't just run down to first moran?! You're benched!!"

Maybe you need to get them to up the ante, like Jeter did.

From now when they're grazed, have them fall down like they've been shot by a Marine Corps sniper. This would be best accompanied by you running out screaming:

'OMG, little Johnny are you OK?'

at the top of your lungs.
