It's amazing how many people don't have 1 of the 3
« on: January 07, 2007, 01:46:34 PM »

Got stopped in a sobriety checkpoint last night but it seemed more like just a license, registration and insurance checkpoint.  They checked every single car for the three, didn't even bother looking at whether I had been drinking or not (I had been, but was well under 0.08).  About 15 cars on the side of the road, with more pulling over every minute.  I wonder what the percentage of uninsured drivers is in California, especially for the demographic of the area that I live in.

50%

I googled uninsured drivers california percentage.

First hit:  http://www.politicalgateway.com/news/read/51611

An estimated 14.3 percent of drivers in the state are uninsured, with that number climbing to 23 percent in Los Angeles County.

Here's another one a bit down the page:

http://www.car-accidents....es/uninsured_drivers.html

puts them at 26%. Anyway, between 14-26 percent is still high.

EDIT: Apparently they have no idea in CA. here's another estimate at 50% in urban areas. But they cite the 14% state figure. I know all I want about this subject for the time being.

http://www.10news.com/inv...tions/9728254/detail.html

In some urban areas -- where there are a large number of migrants -- it is estimated the uninsured driver rate is as high as 50 percent.

Speier said she hopes the fines and automated reporting through the DMV will bring that percentage down significantly.

Throughout California, there is an estimated 3 million drivers without insurance -- nearly 14 percent of all drivers.
