It's a more interesting movie if you know some of the backstories:

Tommy was actually the nephew of an LA crime boss (JAck Dragma?) which is why Paulie tells Henry to 'Be careful, that kid has alot to prove, maybe too much' at one point.

Then Paulie tells Henry he'll talk to Karen about saving their marriage, because 'I know how to talk to her'.

Yeah, he talked to her with his penis for a couple of years.

Agreed.  I have read a lot about it.

Lot's of clues and nods in the movie.

When Henry talks about why they whacked Tommy he said It was for Billy Batts and "a lot of other stuff"

Whacking Stacks was actually an official order from the top given to Tommy, which was his final step to being made.

The orders to whack people have to come from the top.  Henry makes a quote something to the effect of "..there has to be a sit down and then an order given, otherwise you would be the one who got whacked"

There is a nod to this later.  It's subtle and I can't remember the exact quote.  Jimmy may have been calling for them to get whacked but it was Paulie that gave the nod.

Lot's of other stuff too.
