I got to play Torrey Pines South about 15 months ago on my honeymoon. I did the whole "get up at dawn and wait in line" bit. After putting my name on the waiting list, I thought I was in for a long wait, so I went to the clubhouse to get breakfast. I asked for something fast and they suggested a breakfast burrito, so I ordered one, but then turned around and saw a bunch of muffins and pastries on a table, which would have been a much better choice. The burrito took forever, and by the time I got back to the ticket window thing, I found out my name had already been called and I was supposed to be teeing off. I could see the group I was paired up about to leave the first tee, so I started sprinting toward them. I don't think I made the best first impression as I was running full speed, juggling a styrofoam platter and coffee in one hand and trying to pull my driver from my bag with my other hand, with a very panicked expression on my face. My memory of that first hole consists of trying to wolf down a burrito and a very hot cup of coffee between shots and putting up an 8.  |

how bad was the greens fee?
It was $115 walking for me as a non-resident, which was better than the people I was paired up with. One went through an online reseller, and another through their hotel, so they paid $150 and $185, respectively. Unfortunately, the day that I played was insanely foggy, which ruled out any views of the ocean.   I remember standing on some holes with a cliff along one side, and thinking that this must be an impressive sight on a clear day. So, since I missed out on any spectacularly beautiful holes, my favorite is probably #13, a par 5. http://www.torreypinesgolfcourse.com/shole13.htmThe green is way uphill and it's a very intimidating approach shot from that valley with several tough bunkers if you're short. I think Torrey Pines South is overrated. Greens are *feces*e and rounds take 5.5 hours. Beautiful course to be sure but I've played much, much better and often for less. I guess it's worth playing once... but probably not twice.  |

It's a great muni. It's not often you can play a muni from in front of the back tee's and have all the course you dare take on in one sitting. The hole, bunkering and green design is superb.
The thing that takes it a notch down is, because its a muni, it's conditioned like a typical muni and it gets a heck of a lot of play.
Aske, to me, the best hole is a long par 4 on the front side, I think it's #6. One of the best designed holes I've ever played. When you play it for the first time, you say to yourself, "Ahhhhh!, But of course...."
The course demands a pilgrimage. Arriving at Torrey Pines in the dark in the early morning to take your stand in line, begging considerations from the sometimes cranky starter, is something that completes the golfer.
