Yabbies tune in to 'underwater broadband'

It seems Australians have been under-estimating the humble yabbie.

While they are not the smartest species around, yabbies have been found to have a sixth sense which alerts them to predators or prey.

Researchers are likening the yabbies' ability to listen to electrical fields for their survival as tuning into underwater broadband.

Blair Patullo from Melbourne University says the yabbies are now part of an elite club.

"It's generally restricted to a few types of fish, the big sharks that we know well, also stingrays and in the fresh water rivers where yabbies actually live, like probably the cutest animal of them all, the platypus, has it as well," he said.
