A coworker just returned from a weeklong fishing trip 120 miles off the coast of Panama. He said lunch (out on the little fishing boats launched from the mother ship) went like this: catch a fish (he didn't specify, I forgot to ask); filet it; somebody dumps a clump of wasabe of the fileting table; everyone digs in. Sushi that literally was swimming 5-10 minutes before it's in your mouth.

mmmmm....fresh sushi and sashimi. Very nice. I went on a snorkeling trip one day in the Caribbean in the early 90's and the guy running the boat was catching/speargunning stuff for a couple hours. At lunch he'd cook it up. Most unbelievable meal I've ever had. |

Fresh Walleye is the best fish there is. We catch them all the time at the place where "the ducks walk on the fish". Check it out.

Linesville Spillway? erm....... Not at the spillway area, but in the same reservoir. Great fishing lake. |

Oh, and I like fish - a lot! I like fishing, too. But I haven't found other types of seafood tasty very often. I've had shrimp a few times. Liked it once, didn't like it the other times.
Considering where you live, I suspect you have some great, fresh, freshwater fish available to you, so it's no surprise that you like it. Conversely, you probably have a lot of previously frozen and subpar seafood to choose from. The difference between the fresh fish you catch, and frozen fish sticks, is pretty much the difference between frozen and fresh seafood. That makes a lot of sense! I hear so many people raving about seafood and I wonder why so many people enjoy something that tastes like bike tires. I can definitely understand how freezing it to ship it in would change the texture and taste - never thought of that before now, though. |

I really like fish! I like catching fish, too! And I even like filleting fish.  Before Kev and I took up golf, we spent our summer's fishing. Now, I need to find a way to do both more often. Fresh fish is so good, and I miss how frequently we used to eat it.  Kev on the other hand probably does not miss (eating) it at all. |

Or yellow perch caught through the ice! Nat, you have to try some good seafood and expand your horizons. Sometimes, you have to let the taste grow on you. Wow, that brought back a flood of memories! Ice fishing for perch, that is. There was one day where a school was going through the area and we couldn't get them off the hook fast enough as just as we went to get one off another one would also need to be tended. One of my most favorite memories of my grandfather, dad, and Kev. |

Most of us landlocked folks have never had good seafood unless we've traveled to the coast(s). We have some pretty good seafood restaurants in Utah who fly the stuff in fresh daily, and they're decent, but still nothing like you can find on the coast. If frozen is all you've ever tried, I can certainly see why there would be a distaste for the stuff.
Pacific Seafood in SLC used to sell OTC, and their seafood was really fresh and of good quality, you should try them sometime. We had a retail account with them and used to make weekly trips down to get lingcod for our fish and chips...Lingcod prices have more than doubled in the last couple of years, so we switched to halibut which we get through our foodservice guys. |

I knew this story took place in Maryland before I even opened the thread. Born and raised in Bmore so I've had my fair share of steamed crabs, crab cakes and steamed shrimp.
Ole Bay seasoning is the key.
I steam about 5-6 bushels of crabs every year for these folks in Virginia who have no clue on how to steam crabs.
