The guy's freak son, after spending exactly zero seconds checking to see if his dad was alive, sprinted up the hole and proceeded to challenge all of us to a death match with knives.
This the son? aaaaah.....I'm sorry....just couldn't help myself No, that was the guy who did the hitting into. And it was 290, not a mere 265....

You hit yourself? That's a must-share story. It's all written up on FIGS somewhere. Search on "scramble" and "angle iron" with author Funk#49 and it should pop up.

I've never hit anyone, although I've had some close calls. I've been hit twice. The first time was on one hop so it didn't hurt, but it did piss me off because there was no warning or 'fore' and I was standing in the middle of the fairway so it's not like I was out of sight. I hit the guy's ball into a pond out of retribution which may be a bit of a prokrop move, but I was only 17 or so at the time.
The second time was on Masters Sunday in 2005. I have a habit - bad or not - of walking ahead of playing partners. I do it because I walk whenever I can and most players ride so I need to keep pace, but also because I just tend to move and play fast on the course. I was playing with my brother who had a nasty side hill, downhill lie on the edge of a pond. I had walked around to the opposite side of the pond when he hit a god-awful shot that started down toward the water, hooked, rose up, and tracked right toward me in a rising trajectory. As I moved to get out of the way the ball continued hooking in my direction so I tried to jump over it and it caught me square on the boney bump on the inside of my ankle (the tibia?). It sounded like a wooden bat hitting a baseball. It broke the skin and swelled immediately so I was pretty sure there was some kind of break. Fortunately it happened on #18 and I wasn't playing great so I picked up and headed straight to the hospital. The xrays were negative and I was back on my feet the next day but the bruise took close to a year to disappear.
I didn't really learn my lesson though; I still walk ahead of people.

haven't hit anyone... closest I've come is bout 5 yard when as a single a group ahead let me play through while they were standing on the green. I had about 110-120 yards and thinned a 3/4 9i right at a guy, but short of hitting him. bounced off safely to the side.... and again at a long downhill par 4 where I hit driver, got a cartpath bounce, and the ball rolled up just behind a group about 380-400 yards out....
have been very close to being hit several times. one time , about 200 out in the center of the fairway at schitty park #17 in pgh, group behind tees off and no warning, a ball just lands about 1 foot in front of Sal. got in a big verbal fight, almost got physical.... they claimed 'it looked farther than 200 yards'... and I said did you check the tee marker or your scorecard blah blah and they refused to take any fault for it.
another is GrandView where there are several blind dogleg approach shots around the hillsides . you're supposed to wait 5 minutes behind the group ahead of you.... someone gave us about 2 minutes. ball missed me by about 3 yards (i could hear the incoming hiss... but not in time to cover up).

I've hit two people.
The first was my mother when I was about 18 (no, I wasn't playing a gutta percha ball). I shanked a shot, it flew low and right and hit her just below the knee. She still reminds me of the incident.
The second was about 10 years ago. We were playing in an early season two man scramble. The other team in our foursome was a husband and wife. We were hitting our approach to the green, maybe about 60 yards. My buddy hit first. Then I dropped my my ball, lined up my shot, took a practice swing and then hit. I hit it thin and it was a line drive toward the green. I look up and the woman had walked in fron of me and it was heading right at her. It hit her in the side of her back and dropped her like a rock. Fortunately, since it was cold that day, she was wearing several layers and that cushioned the blow. She said she forgot it was a scramble, and after my partner hit, she forgot that another shot would be coming from the same spot. She had a bruise, but she finished the round.
The closest I've come to be hit was having a ball land in the basket of the cart behind the seats while I was sitting in it. It made quite a racket as it bounced around and stay in the basket.

Never hit anyone but I came close to drilling myself once. My one and only foray into night golf had us at a course with lights mounted on telephone poles. I lined one of my tee shots directly off one pole and it came back at me so fast I just barely was able to duck under it. Gave my group quite the laugh. I'm surprised I have never been hit but had some close calls. At the goat track muni I play guys regularly hit into my group. We use pull carts but play pretty fast so I don't think thats the problem. I think most of the guys there are in a hurry to make their shift at the refinery and the rest are just ignorant.

I forgot: I almost donked the guy next to me once at the range when I had the shanks. After about the fourth ball that just missed him, I packed it up and left. A friend and I were missed by two shots in nine holes, one by about ten feet (we were walking off the tee, player hit from the tee of the par-3 we'd just played) and the other maybe three feet (we were on the PRACTICE GREEN and the player was coming up #9). Not a peep out of them either time. Almost came to blows after the second one. Would have been 2 on 4, so not good for us. Happily, his friends didn't want to fight, either.

I forgot: I almost donked the guy next to me... Damn near certain that means something you don't want it to mean in some part of the world. If not, it oughta.

I've came close to hitting someone a couple of times but missed. And I've never been hit (knock on wood). Closest I came to getting hit was on the first hole of the muni in Norman. It was a par 5 and I was standing on the front fringe about to play my 3rd shot. Then I hear a ball land a few feet from me and roll onto the green. Some guy in the group behind me apparently hit the best 3 iron of his life 200+ yds and doesn't know how it reached the green.
