There are regional dialects all over the country, and big parts of the northern regions speak German or French, with a smattering of Baltic languages in the far northeastern region that adjoins the artist formerly known as Yugoslavia.

The different dialects aren't just differences in accent, either. For example: the Venetian dialect is MUCH closer to Portuguese than the Italian spoken in much of the central and southern part of the country, and Sicilian is considered a separate language all by itself.

Most of the people that I met in the 2 years I lived there spoke at least 3 languages: Their local dialect, Italian, and usually English or German...

My little circle of friends generally had one or two people out of the loop in any given conversation, as one of my friends was married to a German girl who spoke only English and German, he  the same, I spoke Italian and English, and MrsFAWGI spoke Italian and French and German, and a little, little bit of English. MrsFAWGI's  brother spoke Italian and English, etc etc.

The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life. -- Teddy Roosevelt
