Chipping On The Green?

Whenever I play with my brother-in-law, he invariably, at one point in the round, gets to a green, a fair distance to the hole, or a position, with a decent uphill elevation change, and says "You know, I should chip this like Lehman did."  His reference is to a situation in which, apparently Lehman chose to either "pitch", or "chip" a shot(fodder for another thread) from the putting surface.  Again, apparently with great success, hence the not shutting the *fudge* up about it.

So, my questions are many.  Vague, uninformed, off topic, unintelligible, mispelled, serve no real purpose, aren't really intended to advance the knowledge of the game, or the enjoyment of this forum, typically posed, sans pants, and oft times, under the influence, and generally not funny. You've come to expect it.

a) Is this even legal?  I can't find anything in the rules to prohibit it.  I know, that you may use any club to strike a ball on the putting surface, but what about contacting the surface?

b) Does anybody remember this shot?  Did it really happen?  The answer to a, or b, will negate, I'm sure either a, or b.

c) I guess, I can't remember ever seeing anybody do it on any green.  So, is it one of those stigma things?  If you do it, and *fudge* up the green, you just look like an ass?

d) Scenario:  Tiger Woods.(chosen, because he has the skill, coupled with ego, and star power for this to occur.)  Picture a green with a front, and back bowl, with a peninsula separating them, or better yet, what's the one green that has the island of deep rough, and a bunker in the middle of the green?  So, Tiger hits, to the back, pin front, and decides, he has to carry, so pulls his 64 degree, and does just that.  Problem is, he takes a pretty good skin, in the process.  Real problem,  Where he hit from is where the next days pin would be located.

If I'm reading correctly, you are not allowed to attempt to "repair" that, since it wasn't damaged by a ball. (I'm speaking to the players putting on the next day.)

So, I ask you:  Deal?  Or, No Deal?

LOL!  I'm actually a huge Tiger fan.  I'm no civicsedan, or whatever the hell his name is. Oh wait, I guess he changed it to QC. 

True story.  I was sitting at The Ground Round in Columbia Heights(when they were still in business.  Should have never closed them.  Great place. YMMV but if your mileage doesn't match mine, you just a *8==>*head, and serving no purpose here.  again, YMMV.  I'm sitting with this guy, and we were watching the second 18, of his first Amateur.  I told the guy, "This kid is good.  I saw him when he was little on the Mike Douglas Show.  You watch, he'll give Norman, Couples, Payne, and those guys a run.  Mickle who?  You're an idiot.  Want another beer?"  True story.

Been a Tiger fanatic evar since, I even have the Tiger head cover.  Nike driver, Nike 3 wood, Nike blade irons,  had a Nike wedge.  No I do not.  Nike shirt.  Nike ball.  Nike hat.  Nike shoes.  True story.

Yeah, that's the one I'm thinking of.  Thanks Whiskey.  The Lehman shot, I guess, was the 96 Open Championship at Lytham.

That pretty much sums it up unless you're playing in an important tournament or there's LOTS of money on the line.  Anybody that would try it in an everyday round should have their wedge wrapped around their neck.

I'm not a course architect, nor do I play one on TV, but I've always had a problem with a green that has a bunker, water hazard, or otherwise right in the middle of it.

That's why it's laid out as such.

I think it's certainly interesting that they would consider adding a hazard like that inside a green.  Might even be fun to play a hole that has one on occasion.  Landing on the wrong side of the green could prove to be a challenge.
