Assuming that this guy really is buying South American land for conservation purposes, I'm not sure that preserves are the most efficient way of saving the planet.  However, it seems likely that these places would not be properly maintained by the locals or local government.

It's a tough problem.  I see the beautiful natural places around me disappearing so fast - meadows, hills, valleys, all turned into ugly tract housing and strip malls.  At the same time, very few people want to live in some futuristic 100 story apartment building crammed into a city - so how else do you house all these people, without building new houses out in the beautiful valleys?

Population control.   Fear

Seriously though.  Not suggesting it should be compulsory (yet) but if people would only replace themselves it would be a tremendous help.  You figure increases in life expectancy would be more than offset by premature deaths.  Never get half the world to go for it though.  Myriad of reasons.  Never get half of America to go for it for that matter.

Amazing that we (collectively) don't worry about this sort of stuff.  I'm far more conservative than most of you guys but I still reckon the planet is worth saving.

Saving the earth sucks. As long as it outlives me, I really couldn't care less. Anyone who disagrees hates America, apple pie, and Jesus.
