Geese Update
« on: June 11, 2007, 01:05:45 PM »

LOL.  Blast email recently sent out by a local course.

Quote
As most of you are keenly aware, the geese at Bugglebrook (*) have been a real problem since our opening (particularly for winter play).  We are extremely happy to report this morning that only a couple dozen remain.  The division of wildlife arrived at Bugglebrook this morning at 4:30 a.m. with over 60 workers and herded the geese by land and sea (they brought boats!). The geese have been tagged and taken away to new homes (south towards Cedar City and north of Ogden).  This is just another step in an extremely positive direction Bugglebrook Golf Club is heading. We're very excited about the complimentary green fee promotion in July because it will bring many of you back to play that haven't played Bugglebrook for quite some time.

Golf course conditions have improved immensely from last year and they are only going to get better and better thanks to the hire of Sammy Sixpack from Some Fine Country Club (*).   Here is a quick update on our 3 biggest complaints:

1) Geese - Gone!

2) Formal Bunkers - Never been better.  Complaints here are now unjustified (waste bunkers - still some work to be done and it will get done).

3) Salty Seven - The 7 holes nearest the clubhouse that have terrible soil are improving.  We have planted some new grasses on these holes and they are doing well.  They are lighter in color so your first thought will be we're not watering enough but that's not the case.  The golf ball plays well off of the hybrid grass.

Sincerely,

Bugglebrook Golf Club

Please come play our course.  It doesn't suck quite as bad as it used to.  Roll Eyes Tongue Grin

By the way, seven holes on crap soil and lousy bunkers are probably not the reputation Johnny Miller wants to hear for courses he designed.   Devil

We have some azz living on the edge of our course that has an automatic goose feeder.  Apparently the guy wasn't too happy about the course going in and spoiling his view.   He'd probably accept the geese from Bugglebrook.

We have feral cats on our course.  They attack all the wildlife.

The good thing about getting old, is that you can hit the ball out of sight.

"Salty Seven" sounds like a stroh household euphemism.

An exaggerated one, though.

Hmm. Either the place has gone downhill since I played there, or I just wasn't paying very good attention. It never struck me as having tremendous groundskeeping problems. I seldom play it because I think their greens fees are unnecessarily high compared to other courses I like better, but I'm tempted to take them up on the free greens fee, if I can find a day to take off work to capitalize on it.

Haven't played there myself in at least five years.  It was very soggy back then though.  It's built on a swamp and it showed.

Cousin played there twice last week.  Said he won't go back.  Too many other options that are better and cheaper.

So Bugglebrook (*) in Tacoma, WA. has the same problem strangely enough, they are uh French Geese (**), the way they are handling it is by...selling the course.  Devil

Damn geese.

Rochester, MN, had an entire park named after them.  Official name was Silver Lake Park, I believe.  Residents, though, referred to it as goose*feces* park.

Great place to bring the little kids!

Kinda the same thing on the other side of the Mountains here, there's a golf course called Rock Island (I think?), we played it once and affectionately dubbed it Goose Poop Island, never played it again.

Used to have a HORRIBLE goose problem at a course I lived near in Cali, which was solved by a very nice lady with 2 Australian Shepherds that would herd the geese into 'Goose Friendly' areas, although alot of the geese  bailed for greener, less canine pastures...

Johnny Miller sucks as a course designer. I've played 3 of his, and they all were TeH SuKk

His designs don't do much for me.  Entrada in St. George is alright but at least fourth on my list of courses to play down there.  Thanksgiving Point in Lehi is the most overrated course this side of Torrey South.  Bugglebrook  Wink is decidedly average.

So I'm, at best, one Thumbs Up for three on the Miller designs I've played.

Gawd I remember that. Funny you bring it up as it was in the news recently:

Petition attacks city's goose-control plan
6/1/2007 8:30:59 AM
By Emily Buss

The Post-Bulletin

An online petition has garnered more than 600 signatures from people opposed to efforts to trim Rochester's Canada goose population.

Passionate pleas are not only from Minnesota but from across the United States, Canada and Australia -- and even a member of the Rochester City Council.

The petition says 50 to 60 injured and crippled geese are year-round residents of Silver Lake and will suffer the most from actions designed to manage the flock, because they can't fly away.

"In particular, this project will cause great suffering for the significant number of crippled and wounded geese that make their home year-round at the lake," the petition says.

Margaret "Choo Choo" Love, a resident of Manitoba, Canada, started the petition and runs a pro-goose Web site. She says she has visited Rochester and doesn't think Silver Lake has an overpopulation of geese. She also says buffers are a cruel way to get rid of them.

"The city of Rochester has promoted Canada geese for many years but has never bothered setting up a waterfowl rescue site for these injured and/or crippled geese," Love said. "Also, Rochester is known throughout the world for its medical facilities. However, for its injured geese, and geese are, by the way, on the city seal, Rochester does nothing.".........................................................

"Choo Choo"? Nice.
