Possibly a ridiculous question
« on: June 27, 2007, 03:27:50 PM »

I don't get into the mechanics of the golf swing usually.  Way too much to think about.  I just try to find something that works on a repeatable basis and... well, repeat.  I like my instructor because he's never used the word "attenuated" in my presence.   Wink

But I find myself wondering...

Speaking in generalities, is a 5' 6" player with 44" driver likely to have a flatter swing plane than a 6' 0" player with the same club?  Does he tend to come from the inside on his downswing?

Mock me if you will.  "Duh"s acceptable and will be savored in the spirit they are intended.

Smiley I should have payed attention in Pivots and Levers 101.

Had a moment of clarity and figured I'd better write it down and put it out there for peer review before it was lost forever.

No worries.. of course there are exceptions.. and they would mostly fit into the 'genetic freaks' categories...

Yes.

Can't say -- it depends on the swing (flaws) of the two hypothetical players.

My good swing (it's not my only swing unfortunately) has me taking the club back on what feels like is a very "outside" line.  It feels like I'm coming down from the outside and cutting across the ball or perhaps pulling it dead left.  However, that's not what happens.  When I can convince myself to trust it I knock it straight and far all day.  Almost impossible to fade and often a slight draw.  I never hook it or pull it.  I never slice it.  My mistakes are pushes and involve hanging back on my right side.  Overall, it's the best and most repeatable swing I've ever had - by far.

Over this past year since I've been swinging this way and I've always thought it kinda weird.  When I look at professionals I don't see them doing this.  Now, I've not videoed my new swing so maybe what I'm feeling is not what I'm doing.  Perhaps it's a great swing plane.  To be honest, I don't want to video it or get "professional help" right now.  It's working and I'm delighted with it.  I just need to avoid slipping back to an inside path.  That's when I suck.

I've sworn off analysis and technical feedback.  It confuses the hell out of me.  I don't want the 1.5 billion swing thoughts.  However, it occurs to me that my (lack of) height has something to do with why this works for me and why I don't see Ernie Els or Fred Couples (my tempo heroes and tall men I believe) doing the same thing.

Couples takes it back way outside (relatively speaking), then drop it in the slot and comes through nicely.  He also plays a fade, from what I remember, but that could be more a matter of his hands/grip v. yours.  Can't speak about Els.

So long as you know your swing and the "feels" well enough to figure out what's off, correct for it, and know when you've corrected correctly ... you'll do fine.

FWIW, I tend to be fairly mechanically minded about the swing.  But when it comes time to make the stroke, my mind is a blank.  As well as improving it, the point of all that practice was to be able to trust it.

well, and the fact he wants to see a fade.  with his power/speed he doesn't need the draw for distance.

but yet,  he serves as a great example of out/into the slot without going 'extreme' in either part
