Eddy don't roam no more....
« on: June 22, 2007, 07:35:16 AM »

Interesting article (I thought) on the erosion of childrens ability to roam away from home without supervision.

I remember in the summers when I was young, leaving the house around 7 in the morning and not returning until 9-10. Biking, walking, playing...

It really is unfortunate.  Even being born in 1980 allowed me the freedom to roam around the neighborhood with friends.  There was a big park about 2 miles away we could ride bikes to by ourselves and spend hours there.  We'd play pick up basketball, baseball, soccer and football at our school a mile or so away as well.  Sad that my son won't be able to have adventures like that with his friends.

It hasn't taken four generations to change, only one.  Although my son has more freedom to roam the subdivision than many kids.

I think having more families with both parents working has more to do with this than anything else.  Once school let out for the summer, we had a number of kids that would hang out together and mostly play baseball all day.  You don't see pickup baseball games much anymore.  I think major league baseball will be in trouble when my generation passes.  Kids these days don't have the same passion for the game.

I used to ride my bike maybe 3/4 mile to a del taco with my friends.  another 1.5 miles to the bike trails, and 2 miles to the beach.  I'd leave the house at 8am and had to go home when the street lights went on.  this was when i was 10, 13 years ago.
