Yeah - they'll capitulate just like they did on electric cars.

Still waiting for the plug-in hybrid - completely cooked and ready to build/sell for years now - but the damned manufacturers won't do it.  I believe it would sell like crazy, so I'm struggling with a reason someone hasn't done it.  Oil interests, anyone?

Plug ins didn't work in Cali, which all left wing propaganada aside was an utter and dismal failure.

How do I know? I worked on EV1's every day of every week for 2 years.

Market research shows that all bitching aside, the American car buying public won't change their buying habit's until somewhere around 4 bucks a gallon, and it has to be there consistently.

Down around 2.50 a gallon , gas is as cheap as it's ever been when adjusted for inflation.

Understood, and agree - but a plug-in hybrid solves the longer trip / fast re-fuel problem that plagued electric car sales.  Run on electric when you can, gas when you need to.  Granted, its not the be-all-end-all of alternative energy engines - but its one hell of a step in the right direction.

arizona : solar farm
rest of country : advanced fast breeder reactors
cali coast : algae h2 evolver farms

all major (yet feasible tech challenges)

bigger challenge: convincing joe moran to drive something  electric charge hybrid 'smart' car esque in size/shape for 95% of his use.   which could be fueled through any of the above

This is one place where the free market really WILL come up with a solution, but like most market solutions it will be painful for a lot of people. Fortunately, it will be people who earned it the good old fashioned way, by ignoring the inevitable.

The internal combustion engine will be around a long, long time is my guess, and what the car companies (who really have the most stake in this and really aren't 'In Bed' with The Awl Bidness) are planning for.

I'd say clean diesel and bio diesel are really the wave of the future. The Evil Euro's are running as much as 75 pct diesel in some places.
