Scenario
« on: July 16, 2007, 02:49:56 PM »

During yesterday's round.  Par 3, 16th hole.

  • Distance: 189 yards to center of green
  • Elevation: green 50-75 feet below teeing area
  • Flagstick/Hole Position: front center
  • Flagstick/Hole Distance: estimated at 175 yards
  • Altitude: ~6000 feet above sea level
  • Temp: ~100 degrees
  • Wind Direction: quartering from 1:30
  • Wind Speed: steady at ~10 mph
  • Wind Gusts: pushing 25 mph
  • Dangerous Miss: left of green
  • Safety Miss: short of green
  • Sight Line: blind, believe it or not (tree)
  • Local Knowledge: none

Had three clubs with me and no clue.  Picked the middle one, waited for gust to pass, made very nice stroke, dropped the shot perfectly no more than 10 feet right of the hole.  Absolute pure luck on picking the right club.  Missed the putt.  Sad

Question just for kicks:  What would you use?  Pick a club, any club.

edit: Added estimated distance to hole.

Club down two, take 3/4 swing to prevent ballooning?  (I thought "quartering" meant at one's back?  One-thirty ain't behind me, bub.)

What was yours?

Club down two from what?

I'm no sailor so you're probably right.  I thought quartering gave us the four off points of the compass - NW, SW, SE, NE.

Ain't tellin' my club.  It's a secret.  Wink

I chose the 6I. But that is assuming that I have any ball striking prowess so late in the round. Otherwise 2 drivers and a PW Sad

LOL at the responses!

With the info given, I'd hit a 6.  Drunk, and loose, if it is a tad downhill, and I'm not against a wind, I'd hit a full 7.

[Feherty] Missing left isn't a problem for me, and coming up short isn't either.  So it's seems I'm in.  Oh, he's all over it BillY.  Oh, wait.  He's not. [/Feherty]

That's about a 4-iron distance for me, but I don't have a 4-iron, I use a 25º hybrid.  However, I would have taken a 5-iron to the tee box for consideration.

normal 4i (190 yd tee shot par 3)
flag in front - 5i
downhill 60-70 ft- 1.5-2 clubs off - 6.5-7i
100*F - 1 club off 7.5-8i
6000F- 1 club off 8.5-9i

all of the above, with wind just a bit into me from right to left, want to swing easy and hit it low, so add 1 club  - 7.5-8i

jnolan says safety miss- short of green-  play it safe, go 8i

I picked 4i, but didn't grok the elevation and downhill at the time, and would probably go 5i or 6i now.

The tree/blind sight line concerns me on a hole where I have no local knowledge, so I'd probably just aim for the safety miss (short of the green) and take my chances getting up and down.

I like aske's thought process.  I did something similar although I'm used to playing at 5000 feet or higher so I left that bit out.  I'm not sure the difference between 85* and 100* gets you much... at least not here where humidity is low.

The wind was very iffy.  Could be anything from a two club wind to not much to consider at all.

Elevation is an estimate but it's a long way down the hill from tee to green.

Green is deeper than it is wide.  With a front hole location thinking about whether missing long is acceptable wasn't even in play.  Just didn't want to go left.  Short was best, right was alright, left sucked.  Not dead necessarily but with a bad bounce you could be in big trouble.

The hole itself isn't blind but where they had the markers, and how close together they were, caused this big tree/bush thing to be between you and flagstick.  You could barely see the back fringe of the green.  A six foot tall person maybe the back third.  You had to scope it out from outside the markers and then trust it.

dystopia said 'grok'.  Awesome.

i know here when it goes from 60ish to 90ish   I gain a club
i know here that a 110 foot dropoff is a 3 club dropoff

i based everything else off guessing around that.
