Ever Play a Walking-Only Course?
« on: August 14, 2007, 05:22:46 PM »

I was reading about the future TW course in NC and how it's going to be walking-only.  And recently, I saw a couple other mentions about walking-only courses in magazines.

Has anyone played a course like this?  I like the concept since I prefer to walk and you'd probably weed out some of the less-serious golfers to keep the pace of play fast.  But I know some people that refuse to play without a cart (mostly due to laziness), and it would be interesting to see the effect of excluding that segment of golfers.

I was wondering what people thought of the idea or what the experience was like.

Bandon Dunes resort (3 courses) in Oregon is walking only. No carts, cart paths etc.

I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

Many times.

I've never seen a cart in the British Isles other than the one they gave my step-father (stroke victim) to just ride along with me at The European Club.

As Fuzzy said, Bandon is carts only unless you have doctor's orders.  I believe those are the only stateside courses I've played which are walking only.

Walking rules.  I will walk if at all possible.  There are plenty of mountain courses around here that are cart only and for good reasons.  But the valley courses with temps under 95, I'm hoofin' it.

Wow, that's amazing as I believe I read in Golf Magazine a few years ago that more and more courses are going to carts only (no walking) as they believe that walking slows the pace of play.  I have gone to using a pull cart instead of a carry bag, but walking is the way to go!

I believe what they really believe is that walking generates less revenue than golf carts.

Prove it.  Devil

You won't convince me of that one.  Slow players make for slow play.

A lot of US courses were designed for cart use, with long treks from green to tee.  On those courses, walking slows the pace of play.  On courses built before the advent of power carts, though, I believe walking can be faster than riding.

That's certainly true.  Those mountain courses I mentioned, they're cart only (or cart necessary) due to the elevation changes which often require great distances between greens and tees.  Same holds for courses in the desert such as Phoenix.  They have some monumental treks between holes.  Mainly, it seems, to have the opportunity to plant as many houses about the course as possible.

I do see many new course designs going back to walker friendly layouts though.  Some very good new ones around here that are a delight to walk (spacey, thinking of Talons Cove and Soldier Hollow Silver specifically).  On the other hand, a few would be ridiculous to walk (Solider Hollow Gold and The Ranches).
