Review: SMT MB303 Irons
« on: August 14, 2007, 09:04:05 PM »

They Suck...period Disgusted

I really tried to like these irons, but reality has set in, and after a lengthy range session today, it was decided that I am going back to my trusty Reid Lockharts.

Specifics:
SMT MB-303 4-PW
Rifle Flighted 5.5
Winn Excel Midsize
Standard Length
1 degree upright
D1 Swingweight

Worst feeling irons I ever hit, nutted shots felt mediocre, slight mi*feces*s felt horrible.  I attribute a lot this to the heads being underweight, and also 2-3g under the advertised weight. I ended having to use 8g tip weights to achieve a D1 swingweight, and coming from a D6 swingweight on my RL's, I never felt comfortable with these irons.

These are a nice looking set of irons, it's too bad I hit them like *feces*.  I really thought I would like these irons after using the Durometer wedges which had great feel.  I should have known better, as I had also hit the CB-2's that I had built for a friend, and they felt clunky as well...though he loves them, go figure.

I believe the once (and future?) golfho Dyno has an issue or two with how much offset they have for blades.

Strangely, the offset never bothered me.  The lack of distance and feel is what turned me off.

I bought a set off of the FGI flea market.  I've never even tried them.  They do look nice.

Follow up to yesterdays review.

I have not played much this year, work has been shifting me between Texas and Wyoming, and I have been working some rather odd hours on a merger that just went through.   Though I have not been playing much, my swing really has never felt better.  I am hitting driver and wedges well, putting lights out (for me) but haven't been scoring well, and iron play has been what I consider horrendous.  So, yesterday, I decided to go to the range with both the SMT's and the my old set of Reid Lockharts.  Aside from swingweight, the two iron sets are identical in length and flex, and after hitting both side by side, the RL's won out by a substantial margin.

Today I played 18 with my older set, and hit the ball extremely well, if it had not been for the changing conditions of the greens, (dew in the AM, dry and fast later in the day) I would have had a PB in at least 3 years.  I ended up shooting an 80 while missing some very makeable putts after the greens dried up due to misreading the speed.  I attribute most of this to being able to hit irons a consistent distance and feeling confident that a well struck ball would go where it was supposed to.

Since I think I have bagged on SMT enough, I will say that the hybrids and wedges I have in play are top notch, but if I were Mike Tait, I would suck up my pride and go back to the drawing board on the irons.

I don't think that is quite possible, for him.
