riaa douchebag, diaf. Remember the good ol' days when you had to shoplift if you wanted to steal music? A right bitch if you wanted the latest Krokus LP as it was very tough to hide those things down your pants. Cassettes should have been easier except they packaged them in that big, long cardboard thingy. Most people I knew resorted to ripping off their friends' music at parties while everyone else was pullin' a train on Nina Pisiso. The internet sure made plundering tunes easier for a while. Then those damn record companies realized making $14.99 on 17,427 copies of a record wasn't good business and made moves to shut down the sharing networks. Greedy bastages. |

Greedy bastages. i have no problem safeguarding against 'theft'. i have MAJOR problems when I buy something, and I have to buy it AGAIN to play it on a different 'player'. like not being able to rip a cd/dvd i legally purchased onto my mp3 player, or make a backup cd-r of it should it accidentally get scratched. i also have a major problem if I (not that I have) were to buy an mp3 online, and want to move it to a different mp3 player (say I upgraded) and then can't. (have to buy it again) i'm no theft advocate. i am a fair use advocate. finally, for what it's worth (then again, metalheads are different...) i have bought probably 800, if not 1000-1200 cd albums based on me downloading from the label/artist site/ etc etc etc a mp3 sample of the music on the cd.  |

going back to my previous point riaa/mpaa attitude is 2-faced let me present you this scenario you buy a cd/dvd. you want to make a backup copy of it or transfer it to your pc/portable.. these agencies stand against this, saying you bought a license to use the item in its original medium/format only, you need a different license for a different player (the crux of their argument these days in the wake of 'piracy').. in short, you did not really buy a physical good (yours to do with as you please), rather only a license you then scratch the item referenced in 1. you email them , stating the problem, and asking them to send you a replacement copy, as you originally purchased a license (not a phys. good) and your license still exists, needing a replacement 'license medium' for 'cost' ($.50 at most for a mainstream cd to be pressed..the physical good)... they write you back and laugh at you. your license never existed! you bought a physical good. so long, sucka  |

You are doing a great job of clarifying your position. Given your "other job" I had always found your short 'n sweet chimings in on the subject a bit odd.
Point #1 - I have no problem with making copies for backup or conversions for alternate vehicle play. But you have to concede that the problem the industry is addressing is not people like you - it's flat out crooks. If the world was full of Burzoomies the record media companies wouldn't be playing this game.
Point #2 - Supply and demand. If something is rare then its value increases. Unfortunately for you, your taste in music runs from the decidely not mainstream to the absolutely obscure. I feel your pain but disagree you should be able to swipe and burn just because the asking price is out of reach. There's a book I want that sells used for $750+ on Amazon. I don't want it that bad so I don't own it. Simple enough.
Point #3 - EXTREMELY good point. One which I've never considered. I'll give you that one in full.
