Ken Jennings is Mormon not Jewish.  But stroh's definitely going to run a planet some day so I can see how you'd make the mistake.

#3 is Honus Wagner. His last batting title was exactly 11 years after this first one, and he had 6 in between.

I sure wish I had his baseball card.

#11 is Joe DiMaggio. Mickey Mantle came one year too late to make it 4 in a row. He won only 3 in a row.

He won the batting title in the final year of the final decade of the 19th century--1900. Remember that the 20th century didn't start until 1901. His last batting title was in 1911--the first year of the SECOND decade of the 20th century.

That's nice and all, but the answer to the question still isn't Honus Wagner.

No disrespect to Mr. Wagner, who reportedly threw  so hard from short that pebbles would arrive with the ball at 1st, and was arguably the greatest shortstop of all time, but

It's an American League player who flirted with .400 a couple of times in the 80's...

Nope, but you're very, very close. Carew won the AL batting title every year from '72 through '78 except for 76.

Who was the guy that won it in '76?

I'm sorry, but 1976 and 1980 are technically part of the same decade (71-80) and 1990 was part of the next decade (81-90). So technically his batting titles were encapsulated in 2 adjacent decades. There was no year 0 AD/CE. The first year decade of the common era spanned from 1 to 10 AD/CE. The final year of the 19th century was, in fact, 1900--the first year that Honus Wagner won the batting title. He won 7 more batting titles up to 1911, which is the first year of the second decade of the 20th century.

Nobody ACTUALLY counts decades that way, seriously. I didn't see a single millenium party hosted on Dec 31st, 2000.

I'll concede the point that technically Wagner won in 3 different decades, but the answer is still 1976, 1980 and 1990.

I'd rather it WAS Wagner.

That's because your average American gets excited by watching numbers roll over on an odometer, which is fine since odometers start at 0 and not 1 like the Gregorian calendar does.

you think the pine tar helped that much?   GB did have a surprisingly low lifetime BA for a guy who flirted with 400

Top 100 in average according to MLB.com.

305's not too shabby, and the number of players with over 3000 hits and 300 home runs is pretty short.

The pine tar was a testament to the greatness that was Billy Martin....
