Welcoming new neighbors to the neighborhood
« on: September 17, 2007, 10:02:54 AM » |
|
When we moved into our place last year about half of our nearby neighbors gave us housewarming/welcome-to-the-neighborhood type gifts like cookies, banana bread, bottles of wine. It was a nice touch, very different from our old neighborhood.
So now we've got a new family moving into a house two doors down, and we're trying to think of an appropriate gift. I was originally thinking of a bottle of wine, but the woman might be pregnant, so that's probably out.
I think it's more the gesture than the actual gift involved, but I was wondering if any of you had given new neighbors a welcoming gift.

Take your dog over, let it *feces* on their lawn, see how they react to it, then decide. If they're going to be jerks about your dog *feces*ting on their lawn, no real point in spending a lot of money on them.

heh, we've already got dog issues in our neighborhood. One neighbor called the police on us for our barking dog soon after we moved in, and they have two dogs that bark like crazy.

Nah, we have loads of Mormons who do that for us. It's very handy. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up.
We figure out who's cool over time and hook them up with a bag of oranges for Christmas. The arseholes get nothing.

My wife baked cookies for our new neighbors eventhough they are renters. I wouldn't do anything for people moving in that aren't right next door though. *fudge* em.

You should offer your wife/woman to the man of the house so that he can enjoy her, too.

We've usually give wine, or beer. Like you said, it's just a gesture.
Have you met them? Do they seem cool?

Haven't met them yet, giving the gift would be the excuse to go over and meet them.

Ask them if they want to come over sometime and play with your Wii.

I've been thinking about this and crunching some numbers, and I don't think we can afford any Mormons. I've also thought of completely ignoring them, but there are some old cliques in our neighborhood and as the other newbies on the block, it's in our best interest to stick together. Good call about the sack of oranges, though, I've been using a sack of doorknobs in the past (I'm old school). But with the cost savings of a sack of Sunkists over Schlages, I bet we'll have enough to at least hire a couple surly Buddhists.

Well, I'm sure you can guess that we don't bring over wine or other such beverages.
Actually, we really haven't had many people move into our neighborhood. At the old place (the mobile home court), all the people who moved in and out really kept to themselves and didn't want much to do with anyone. I was too young to pay attention to what my parents brought over. Then we became the new kids on the block when we moved in with my grandma to care for her. But that was back into my dad's childhood neighborhood, and other than a welcome back "Rather_be_Hunting" can't say there was anything along the lines of a welcome. People just offered themselves, their friendship. As a 15 year-old kid, I appreciated that more than anything they could have brought. Of course, it could have been considered an inappropriate time considering my grandfather was dying when we moved in.
I'd probably do some baking. With fall moving upon us, I think I might bake a pie. Apple sounds really good right now.
