In an interview immediately following the match, Solo criticized both Ryan's decision and Scurry's performance, "It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves. And the fact of the matter is it's not 2004 anymore. It's not 2004. And it's 2007, and I think you have to live in the present. And you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past. It doesn't matter what somebody did in an Olympic gold medal game in the Olympics three years ago. Now is what matters, and that's what I think."

She's right though.

I don't think she's right to say, "I would have made those saves".  She can't say that unless she's in.  The score could have been 5-0 if she played.  No one knows that answer.

She didn't say that though. She said that "she had no doubt in her mind" that she would have made those saves. IOW, she was confident that she could have made those saves.

The point is that if Solo had been in at goalkeeper, win or lose, nobody would have been wondering if Scurry could have made the saves.

Regardless of what the ladies say or think, it was a bonehead move by the coach.  I haven't read a report that suggests otherwise.  Solo had clean sheets throughout the entire competition.  Almost 300 minutes without a goal.  How can you justify the decision?  Crazy.

I completely agree with this. When I heard Solo was being benched my first reactions was WTF! She wasn't hurt and she was not playing bad. There would have been no question if her play was poor but she had the hot hand. And Scurry hadn't played in competition at this level for quite some time. If the coach was going to do this then Scurry should have played more. Equate it to hockey, you don't bench your starter in the 7th game of the semi finals of the Stanley Cup just because your back-up had been there before 3 years ago.

You're all right - it was definitely the wrong move...... but they would have lost anyway.

Hope is right to be a little miffed, but is doing herself a disservice by saying she would have made ALL the saves.  Makes her sound childish.  Besides, she is known for blowing easy saves every once in a while - she is far from being 'all that'.

I don't know.  I just saw the second yellow on Shannon Boxx tonight.  Give me a break.

I didn't see the match but I assume, given they were only down 0-2 with an own goal, they were in it prior to that.  You can't make up two goals a man short.  Would they not have had a chance playing 11 v. 11?

Any chance Solo will refuse the start in the 3rd place game, just to make a point?

Apparently, the decision to leave Solo solo for the 3rd place game came after a discussion with the team "leaders". I guess the other players weren't too happy about the criticism of the decision to bench Solo in the game against Brazil.

Coach:  Solo wasn't acting much like a team player with those comments, was she?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  I don't think we need that kind of distraction for the next game.  Do we?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  I mean, do you think she really could have made those saves?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  I mean, am I the bad guy here?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  Do you think she should even travel with us?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  Anybody else want their whiny ass left here in China?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  Good decision.  Thanks for the input.  Any objections, or questions?
Team Leaders:  Um, No.  I guess.

Coach:  All right then.  It's settled.  Solo is solo.  Ha that's funny.  Let's go kick some ass.
