Interesting- Palmer vs. Big Ben...
« on: October 08, 2007, 12:19:24 PM »

now yes, palmer throws a lot more {to a more explosive set of receivers}and ben is arguably more of a 'manager' .... at least.so all the pundits say...  Wink

Career passer ratings all games- palmer 91.4, ben 89.2

now, let's delve a bit deeper... throw out each ones worst year (palmer's rookie starting year, ben's motorcycle/appendix/steelers can't run it a lick year)...

completions   attempts   %   yards   yards/attempt   TD   INT   Sack   Sack Yards   Rating   Rushes   Yards   Average   TDS   Fumbles   Lost

palmer
770   1189   0.647603028   9042   7.60470984   70   31   60   380   96.5   66   87   1.318181818   1   20   9

big ben
445   694   0.641210375   6019   8.672910663   43   23   64   431   98.5   95   270   2.842105263   4   7   4

tds/attempt: palmer    .059 ; big ben .062

not meant to say who is better,  i honestly thought it would be much more of a wipeout for palmer except in yards per attempt.

I think how different the teams are makes it a tough comparison.  They have about the same completion % but Palmer throws twice as much.  And Palmer is their team completely where Ben is one part of their team.  As the Steelers have much better special teams/defense and running game.  But I agree I am surprised the numbers are that similar or at least Big Ben is that efficient.

Exactly. It's not something you can compare directly.  I was simply shocked it was so 'close'- mainly for all the praise Palmer gets.  I think if you switched the teams, ben would do about as well, but palmer would fall off.  One thing that isn't directly in the stats is 'sack evasion'- one area that palmer has advantage over big ben (besides receiver skills) is pass protection.  As good as the steelers line is at run blocking,  ever since 2005 ben has been stepping out of pressure on just about every play.... and I don't think palmer throws near as well on the run as big ben.
