Best on the Ivories
« on: October 23, 2007, 06:42:54 PM »

I was listening to Asia on the way home (I know what your thinking but I wasn't in the mood for Jimmy Buffett and I didn't have anything else) and there was a solo by the Jeff Downs he keyboardist and it made me wonder who the best on the keyboard was. I don't really have a best but I was wondering what all you musical experts thought.

First that popped into my head was Rick Wakeman.

I'll give it more thought and see if I can top that.

Here's a primer:  http://www.digitaldreamdo.../pages/best_keyboard.html

Billy Preston and Gregg Allman were the first that came to mind for me.

In terms of popular music, you've got your Glen D Hardin, and then you've got everybody that wants to be half as good as Glen D Hardin is, both as a player and arranger.

I'd give special mention to Brent Mydland, who was the only one of the 5 keyboardists the Dead had over 30 years that could pull the rug right out from under Garcia when it needed to be pulled.

The best I ever saw play just ivories was Van Cliburn.

If your talking rock keyboardist for me it begins and ends with Wakeman, watching him perform was what it must have been like to watch Michaelangelo create The David.

I'm amazed that Jerry Lee made the list but no Little Richard.

I also wanted to give a nod to Pig Pen Mckernan from The Dead, he may have been the best "pure" musician of the lot. By lot I mean The Grateful Dead.  Tongue Oh crap I forgot to type IMHO now MFAWG's gonna attack me somehow.  Sad

Emmylou used to be pretty hot with dark hair (although she still looks pretty good for a 60 year old with gray hair). I think she and Jaclyn Smith sold their souls to the Devil.
