Football Question

I thought that celebrations are to be ruled as 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. So, if someone spikes the ball after a td, there should be a penalty. However, I'm not seeing that being called much. So, is there an exception clause, or is it just not being enforced, or am I understanding it wrong??

The flag is thrown for "excessive" or "prolonged" celebration. Spontaneous display of excitement, like spiking a ball, is OK (unless the spike is directed at a player of the opposing team). Organized group celebration or anything choreographed using foreign objects/props is subject to the penalty. Now, you also cannot celebrate while on the ground. So no more break dancing. |

Actually, you're not supposed to use the football as a prop during your celebration (TO using the ball to resemble a video camera) . With that being said, spiking the football should be a penalty.

Okay, that make sense to why I was thinking spiking was not okay.
Now the problem, it's not being enforced much (at least in the games I watch)....

umm, no. this aint college. Thanks! There is a reason I don't like women's & college sports as much... What's the reason? I really enjoy college sports. And, spiking the ball at any time is an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in college football. MUCH tighter rules on stuff like that. |

Why? Either you can use the football as a prop during TD celebration or you can't. I consider spiking the ball a TD celebration! It should be a penalty. |

And, spiking the ball at any time is an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in college football. MUCH tighter rules on stuff like that. I suppose some of it is because my dad didn't watch it much. I suppose some of it is I don't watch it much, but I don't see the same competitiveness that I can usually see in pro sports, unless it's a major game (like the playoffs). Or maybe I'm just watching the  wrong season games.  Believe it or not, I'm a very aggressive and competitive person when it comes to sports, and I guess I like to see that when watching it, too. I'm not saying that there aren't any college athletes that are competitive. I guess I just don't see enough of it. On the other hand, I'm not saying all pro athletes are competitive. Moss is a great player, but he's also a good example of this. If he didn't want to play, he basically didn't. There were just some games that he lacked a competitive drive, yet, at the same time, he had tons of it during other games. |

Football's only problem is that it has 8.5 billion rules. It's tough to keep up from one year to the next.
On topic, nothing wrong with a spike. Scoring a TD is a good thing. Celebrating should be allowed to some degree.
Although there's no question that Barry Sanders celebrated better than any. Politely handing the ball to the official rules.
