It's a book that should never have been made into a movie.
I've never read the book, but upon this point I think we can both agree.

To Tame a Land was called Dune pre-production. I can't remember if why they changed it but I think they were told they couldn't. Some sort of copyright permission thing.

Never saw Dune or read the book. Now that I'm older and the novelty of Star Wars has worn off I now see that Lucas can't direct.

The only things Lucas does well are sound and special effects. His screenwriting is teh sukk. The dialogue is trite and some of the scenes in the prequels were just ridiculous. How many *goshdarn* times does somebody have to say "I've got a bad feeling about this" or use the term "delusions of grandeur"? Did Lucas completely run out of ideas when the storyline called for Obi-Wan to go to a diner to talk to the short order cook who comes out wearing a greasy shirt? OMG Then there's the scene in which Obi-Wan goes to a Jedi library to do research. WTF? Doesn't he have some kind of wireless device to look that *feces* up?
As for Dune, I think I slept through about 75% of it when I went to see it in the theater.

or why didn't he just use the force to will the information into his brain?

IIRC Frank Herbert abhorred rock music, metal in particular, and expressly forbade them from using the title. I'm assuming Maiden was simply honoring his wishes, as I think it would probably fall under fair use if they really wanted to press the issue.
