http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/What defines Bristol, etc., on tv more so than Charlotte, etc? http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/bms/For me the fact that it's only .533 mile track and they get 160,000 people there, the shots from the blimp or the plane or whatever are uber cool. Also this is where "rubbin' is racin'" plays. You don't get a lot of banging on the big tracks, Bristol and Richmond, yup. Rubbin' is racin'? Is that where cars are constantly jockeying for a better position? Is that synonymous with "playin' bumper cars", too? How long will this race approximately take? Generally the American sporting fans attention span is two to four hours, this ain't cricket. NASCAR racing is no different, generally around the three to four hour mark, but these things called yellow flags slow the race down. The modern NASCAR has become a marvel of sophisticated aerodynamics, where a wrong 1/2 a pound of air pressure (too much or too little) in one tire can ruin a day. The short tracks remind me of how it used to be in the "old" days, where these southern dudes were flying and playin' bumper cars just to deliver the next batch. I don't need any lessons regarding the attention spans of sports fans. Next time I go to a sporting event, I am going to make sure that I go with someone who loves sports as much as I do. Leaving a Twins game that's tied in the bottom of the 11th inning. That just goes against the grain. Is there an average time that each individual race takes? Like this week's race, would it fall closer to 2 hours or 4 hours or somewhere in between? Or does that vary, too? Is there a typical number of laps for the races or does each race vary? Varies, not every track is the same length, but 400-500 miles is the general, there is a 600 mile race in the summer I think it's at Charlotte? that is a brutal test to both man and machine. Now you can't have a 500 mile race on the shorter tracks, like Bristols .533 mile track, (well you could) but you'd be there all day (again the attention span), so that's usually called "The Sharpie 500 (or insert sponsor here" that means 500 laps. How can I tell what the 500 (or any other number) means? I mean, I know that the Indianapolis 500 is 500 miles. However, how am I supposed to know when the Whatever 500 is referring to laps instead? And how about the SpongeBob 500? How come NASCAR fans take that? Even I choked when I heard about that. Who would you say are better drivers/drivers more interesting to follow? Again varies, I like Jimmie Johnson 'cuz he's cute as a bug and I get lost in his dreamy brown eyes. You'll find that NASCAR fans are THE most brand loyal people in this country, if a person likes Darrel Waltrip and Darrel Waltrip drives the "Tide" car, well **** it they are going to use Tide until the day they die. You can insert Dale Junior/Budweiser or Tony Stewart/Home Depot or Ricky Rudd/Snickers and the loyalty remains the same. And here I thought I would get a sensible answer, and then I get a reply saying Johnson has dreamy eyes.... *shaking head* Brand loyal, I can understand that. When I actually find shoes that fit my little feet, that's the brand for me. Okay, so tell me this. I like Chevy, Adidas, Menards & Sears, Relic & Fossil, Winchester & Colt. I could probably think of some more, if you need me to. As far as drivers go, I don't care what they look like. Whose character shines when he talks to the press? Interesting to listen to? Etc....

Here's my 10 most interesting, in no particular order and not NASCAR specific: 1) The Daytona 500 It really is the Super Bowl, and has supplanted Indianapolis as the premier American motorsports event. 2) The Indianapolis 500. It's still Indy, and no other event in the world can claim the history. 3) The Brickyard 400 NASCAR at Indy, and now the venues premier event by any yardstick. 4) The Knoxville Nationals Usually about 150 guys from as far away as South Africa show up to race winged sprint cars in the middle of an Iowa cornfield for 5 days, and it'll draw 50,000 fans a night for all 5 nights in a form of motorsport where 5 to 10 thousand usually constitutes a 'Huge' crowd. 5) Bristol Anything racing at Bristol is fun, and I think we'll see USAC cars there in the very, very near future. 6) Monaco GP Something about the very best in the world on public streets in one of the most beautiful places in the world is very cool, even if the actual racing usually leaves a little to be desired. 7) The Chili Bowl. 200 midgets show up in Tulsa in the dead of winter for 5 nights of racing, and everybody from NHRA drag racers to Brazilian road racers show up to drive. They race 'em indoors on an 1/8 mile track, and gas masks are recommended. The last 5 winners come from 3 different series, and the 2005 winner had never driven an open wheel car before. Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway. This is one of the largest pursed, non sanctioned races in the country, and usually draws all the best from the West Coast and quite a few gunslingers from the midwest as well. Kasey Kahne won this event for the 2d time in 2004, and it was one of the most incredible 40 lap performances I've ever seen (I was also sitting right in front of the aforementioned Tammy) 9) Any NHRA Friday night qualifying race. I don't drag race much, but 10,000 horsepower shooting flames 40 feet in the air at night and going 300 miles an hour in the space of a couple of blocks is about as cool as it gets. 10) (Seriously) Whatever's running close by that doesn't have fenders on it on payday.

Okay, I really am unknowledgeable in this sport, even about the basics. Please keep explaining it as you are though, 'cause the more I have to ask questions about, the more I'll learn.
"Having fenders on it on payday", that's a phrase I'm not familiar with. What does it mean?
What cars are currently being raced at Bristol?
USAC: United States Automobile Club. What defines a USAC car? Are USAC events separate from NASCAR?

[/quote]I'll try and give you a sensible answer. Most people I know pick a driver either by the way they drive or by the brand. As far as they way they conduct themselves that will usually turn people off of them (examples would be Gordon, Busch bothers, and the late Dale E.) On the other hand some people love those kind of people. Best advice I can give you is watch a couple races, listen to some interviews and you will find a driver to cheer for. Mine is Raines driving the 96 car (only reason is my company is sponsoring him). My wife likes Jimmy Johnson but does not like Gordon. My sons like Johnson, Tony Stewart. A safe bet would be Dale Jr. but again you just need to watch and pick who you like. Anyone can recommend a driver to you but only you can pick one you like.

Raced hard, drank harder, and won over 1000 features with a cigarette lighter wired in every car he raced for 4 decades and ends up best remembered as a punch line for Olbermann on Sportscenter. Richard Trickle in a bobsled last winter, at the age of 65: And in one of the beer wagons he made famous on the upper midwest shortracks racing in the old ASA:

LOL, no offense taken, and none by him either. There are alot of really good *8==>* Trickle stories out there.
Classic *8==>* Trickle:
He got fined once by NASCAR for lighting up with the in car camera on national TV. Friggin' hilarious: 'Here's D!ck Trickle's in car', and there he was lighting a Marlboro.
Different world back then: The late, great JD McDuffie usually had a cigar going...
