just get an HDMI box.... IF I have that option, sure. Thats for tomorrow's phone call. And I was reading that some people were having better luck with Yamaha and Denon. So I'm not convinced this would happen with ALL receivers yet. Just disappointed in the 'work around' and sitting on the phone for 40 minutes before getting anyone.

SUCKS! It won't accept the DVI-HDMI input from my cablebox/dvr. When I try the component inputs instead performance is terrible, especially when playing back recorded programming. Unacceptable. Since the DVI-HDMI works just fine directly to my display, I'm on the phone trying to get Onkyo support. On hold for 35 minutes now with no person picking up yet!!! Color me stupid, but why are you trying to route the video feed through your Onkyo? What's the objection to running video directly to your big-ass TV (via HDMI) and sound to your home theater box via optical input or (gasp!) component cables?

My TV only has one HDMI input, so anytime I want to watch a DVD/HD-DVD I'd be unplugging and re-plugging the cables in. And its the principle man. Don't go gettin all 'good enough' on me - this is the AV Forum - didn't you hear?

OK ... so what's the video performance like if you feed the DVD to the big-ass TV via its component inputs?
(I wired mine that way and, frankly, I don't see much difference in the DVD image quality between optical input, HDMI input, and 3-component cable input. But then, German industrial pröñ is pretty grainy to begin with.)

Some HD-DVDs will not go full resolution without HDMI - more of that DRM bs. I'd be better off using component from the cablebox to the display (a smaller difference in quality) - but thats not why I got the receiver. I got the receiver specifically for the HDMI interfacing and HD upscaling. I know the box I have supports HDCP in the DVI interface, its just a matter of getting Charter to enable it. As long as they don't give me a hassle I should be ok. If they do refuse to turn it on because its 'non-standard' for them, then I go back to my old receiver and analog TV input, ...or switch to DirecTV.

It just overheated and shut itself off tonight while I was watching a movie. Seems the clearance isn't enough to keep this hot thing (and boy is it hot) cool enough. Shopping for a new unit I guess

Onkyo not for you it seems. When I designed my cabinet I put about 9" of clearance in the AVR space.
