Man, this sounds just like that novel/movie The Rainmaker.

fact of the matter is, they just plain don't care. they aren't going to lose any business over it. if they do it will be minimal. it's all about dollars and cents.

women are like tornados. In the beginning there's a lot of sucking and blowing. In the end, the car's gone, the house is gone..

This story makes my head want to explode, particularly given what I do for a living. Unfortunately I have some inside knowledge of how often things like this happen and don't end up as media fodder.

Is this journalism?  There's an almost complete lack of relevant details in the story.

Why was the payment declined initially?  Why did they approve the bone marrow transplant but not the liver?  Why did the family not proceed anyway?  Why did the hospital not proceed anyway?  If the situation was so dire, why have two weeks gone by since the application was made with, as far as the story reports, no medical action having taken place?

Seriously, 'twas a "raw story" indeed.

Don't you watch House?

No, Hugh Lawrie is forever Prince/Lieutenant George for me.

Right turn, Clyde.

Did you ever catch him on SNL?  Very talented musician.  And funny as hell.  He did this Dylan take off, harmonica and all.

Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?
Narrator: You wouldn't believe.

If there's a possible silver lining to this story, in all likelihood, the liver that became available for Nataline will go to or has already gone to save another person's life. One can only hope that the recipient is/will be another young person like Nataline with a long life ahead of him/her and not another Mickey Mantle, who used his new liver for only 2 months before ultimately kicking the bucket.
