1) Title of an old WWII movie about a RAF pilot. 2) In the song The Hero's Return by Pink Floyd. Spoiler lyrics below in case you give up. Jesus, Jesus, what's it all about?
Trying to clout these little ingrates into shape.
When I was their age all the lights went out.
There was no time to whine or mope about.
And even now part of me flies over
Dresden at angels one five.
Though they'll never fathom it behind my
Sarcasm desperate memories lie. duh. 1-5 is altitude, I believe 15,000 feet. I should have gotten that earlier. Angels=Planes? Correct-a-mundo. As to the latter, no idea. Throw out a new one Fuzzy. If anyone still wants to think about mine the answer's there in Fuzzy's spoiler. |

I asked a pilot friend. He responded, "Most believe that 'angels' refers to being above ground. In an airplane, that is usually a good thing..." |

Take a position on something. Offer your opinion, etc. Yep. Meaning To display one's opinions and beliefs. Also used to mean to show one's intention to hold on to those beliefs until the end. Origin In nautical battles colours (flags) were lowered as a mark of submission. Nailing your colours to the mast meant you weren't intending to submit. It is correct to use the English spelling, rather the the US 'nail one's colors to the mast', as the phrase originated in England. The practise is alluded to in Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas' The Dispatches and Letters of Lord Nelson, 1845: "Half past 6, shot away the main and mizen-masts: saw a man nail the French ensign to the stump of the mizen-mast." The first record of the phrase in print is from that inveterate coiner of phrases - Sir Walter Scott, in Marmion, 1808: "Record, that Fox a Briton died... Stood for his country's glory fast, And nailed her colours to the mast." |

I always thought nailing colors to the mast was putting a rubber on, sort of explaining why the woman always salutes.
