There must be some substantial hidden costs if Ford can buy people out like that to save up to not more than 10% on its total factory-worker compensation outlay.  Maybe the fact that the replacement workers start at the beginning of the pension-vesting road?

But what else would you have them do, Aske?  Raise the prices of their vehicles?  Lay off those workers and move even more production outside the US?  Skimp even more on quality and/or materials?

Does the auto industry still pay a traditional pension? Even the federal government stopped long time ago in favor of the Thrift Savings Plan, which functions exactly like a 401-K.

For the second consecutive season, Honda powered the entire 33-car starting field at Indy. And for the second year in a row – and the only two times in Indianapolis 500 history – there was not a single engine- related retirement in the event. Prior to the race start, Honda-powered drivers also had turned a total of 13,716 laps this month (34,290 miles) in practice and qualifying with equal reliability.
