Mail-In Rebate Rant

I bought my parents a digital photo frame for Christmas. Got it from NewEgg, an online retailer renowned for their exceptional customer service. The frame, it turned out, had a mail-in rebate for $30 -- that's lunch for a week around here.
Unfortunately, my wife wrapped the frame when it arrived, then shipped the box off to my folks' house (where my family would be converging on Christmas) so things wouldn't be late and we wouldn't have to haul all that crap in the car. This meant that the coveted UPC symbol went winging its way to Pittsburgh instead of resting in my grubby little hands.
So I bring it back with my from our holiday visit, fill out the rebate form ... and notice that the form post-mark may not be later than thirty days FROM PURCHASE. This discovery occurred on Day 38, using that frame of reference. *fudge*. So I include a submissive note with my rebate form and ancillary documents, recounting facts substantially as set forth above, and wrapping it up by politely asking they honor my rebate despite its postmark being thirty-eight days from purchase. Bear in mind here, NewEgg itself is the rebater, not the digital frame manufacturer -- NewEgg makes the rules, they can bend them.
(I pause at this time to recognize that I missed the 30-day window and that, according to the clear terms of the rebate, NewEgg has no binding obligation to grant my rebate request.)
As you have no doubt figured out, my rebate form was rejected as being untimely. Which is disappointing.

That sucks. Too bad they couldn't make an exception, because we all know your reasons were legitimate. I have an idea! Maybe if we all emailed them to explain your upstanding character, they'd reconsider.   |
